coolant leakage
Monday, February 07, 2005 10:40 AM
I noticed my car is starting to get past the 195 marker on the temp this past week since it's been getting warmer. I check under the hood and noticed all the coolant is gone. So of course i fill it back up, and then 2 days later it's gone again, and i see small amounts of coolant in the engine bay. I just replaced the radiator and condenser this summer. So are there any other reasons why my coolant would be leaking so quickly?

Here is what it could be:
1-Water Pump
2-Thermostat
3-Broken coolant line
4-It is possible you over filled the resevoir which can cause overheating(unlikely as you say it is gone)
5-if an air pocket gets caught anywhere in the coolant system it will overheat(again prolly not this)
The first thing you have to do is figure out where the leak is comming from, to do this park the car somewhere with no fluid marks on the ground and re-fill it. Look under the car and you'll see where it is. The best possible outcome is a bad coolant line which costs nothing to fix but waterpumps a liltle more but still lucky you dont have a quad 4 for that. Thermostat isnt too bad either. Well hope that helps a litle.

....my bad i just checked your registry you have a quad 4, the waterpump is $500 to fix at a mechanic and while your in there if that is infact the problem your gonna wanna get the timing chain and tensioners fixed. I hope its just the thermostat or coolant line or your in for either a nightmare of labour or a big mechanic bill.

the colant line is the small metal looking line located directly behind the radiator/condenser? Because that is where i noticed most of the coolant fluid at

There are coolant lines from the resevoir to radiator and from the radiator to the engine as well as engine to resevoir. Just follow them from the resevoir and look them over. Just figure out exactly where its leaking from by looking where it drips underneath the car.

ok, i wiped the engine bay down with a cloth and refilled the reservoir, and noticed that the leakage is coming from the bottom of the passenger side. Does that mean I need to replace that hose? I didnt see anythng wrong with the hose. How much would it cost tto replace a hose or two?

That is the location of the water pump, it could still be a hose but if its comming from there than I think its your water pump.

if it was from the water pump, would it splash up everywhere when driving?

I did mine a few months back. The life-time warranted "premium" pump was $20 from my local autozone. $3 on gasket sealant (I used but may not be necessary) and $8 on fresh coolant plus 1.5 hours of my labor. If I was to do it again, I bet I can cut the time to 30-45 minutes.

In 2000, I was charged $250 to replace the original pump and only to replace the 2nd time less than a year for another $230... Be prepared to pay more nowaday.

Water pump is a very simple project for the 2.2 Cav.

1. take off the belt
2. remove the negative wire on battery and then the alternator
3. and drain the coolant
4. remove 3 bolts to undo the pump pully
5. remove 4 bolts to remove the pump,
6. clean the mating surface
7. put new paper gasket (I used bead of gasket sealant on the gasket).
8. line up the gasket & the pump and hand tight the screws
9. tighten the bolts (I just use my box wrench but not forcing)
10. put everything back

I have a 2.4, would i have to lift the engine out to replace my water pump?

i spoke to a mechanic, and he told me the situation might be a pressure problem in my hoses. Can I just drain my coolant out and run water through?

Its prolly the water pump, i regret not replacing the timing chain then because now i have to do that on mine but on the other hand it is an excuse to throw cams in. It will cost in the area of $500 tog et the water pump fixed.

I have a question about this. I have a 1996 Z24. I have just recently had to replace the heater core, thermostat, and upper and lower radiator hoses, and the radiator itself. The thermostat was the most recent replacement. After that the car ran fine for a few weeks but now it seems to be leaking coolant all the time. I'm talking a stream of coolant down the driveway. But the car doesn't begin to overheat for quite sometime. I then replace the lost coolant and the process starts over again. It seems to be coming from the driver's side. Any suggestions on this would be extrememly helpful.
Thanks alot.

argh !!! Now I'm starting to get frusterated!

I am losing coolant.... but it seems to be boiling once the car gets up to operating temperature. It's not leaking anywhere else other than coming out the coolant resevoir. The waterpump and thermostat are fine, I did a flush... seemed to go fine. New coolant 50/50 dex cool and water, the system is bled so no air pockets.

What else could it be???
