If it's been over 3 years, you are pretty much screwed.
You know 3/36, that is all they are obligated for, if it broke with 30K, but it's been more than 36 months since you bought it, it's on you.
Sucks, because the car is so new, and was obviously defective in some way, but I can pretty much guarantee they won't do it for free if any of the above applies to you.

For that kind of money you might as well just find one in a junkyard and swap it in.

I'd still try to get Pontiac to pay for it. I'm not sure how, but I'd aim to make it more expensive for them NOT to pay for it. Dunno. I'm mean.

Timing chain should not be breaking obviously. Id say get a lawyer and tie them up in court for years.

doesn't powertrain have a 5 year warranty? 3 year bumper to bumper, 5 year powertrain?

the timing chain should never break-- and since you arent too far out of your warrenty you can try to get them to do a good will warrenty job--most dealerships WILL do it and especially since they tell everyone that the timing chain is not supposed to ever break (ive been told as well).

breaking a timing CHAIN is very rare. timing BELTS are another thing all together. id ride em like a tired mule till they fix it. it shouldnt happen...at least not for many, many more miles.

Ya in theory it should not break. But on some Ecotecs it does. I have seen one on a rental 03 Cav last year. The Chevy dealership that I had my S/C program installed, an old buddy form HS works there, he says he has seen like 3-4 of them.

So Cris you are not alone.

so i talked to a gm rep and they want to help me out. they will be helping me out alot if it is just my timing chain that broke. they are going to cover $1000 to fix it. the dealership told me it will cost over 1000 not sure how much. BUT thats if its just the timing chain. if they have to replace the head then it will cost around $3000. now if its the head then i think ill have to give gm a call back and see if they can do better. yeah 1000 is great but for a car that new @!#$ like that shouldnt happen...anyways just an update

^they should pay for it all and im not joking. Just being a couple months out of warranty tell them to fix it under GOOD WILL (use that phrase, many dealerships will do this and they will know what you mean). if they have to replace things other than the chain, well its not your fault the chain broke and messed up other things you know?

same exact thing happened to me and i had to buy a new engine for my car. for the better in the long run i guess. now i have a 2000 2.4 with 35,000 miles in a 99 z24 with 72,000 miles.

but depending on how bad the engine is you might have to just get a new engine like i did.

i'm baaaaack!!
