Can't find the source of the rattle
Friday, March 18, 2005 12:54 PM
I'm not really sure which forum to post this on.

I have a 97 Cavalier coupe. While driving in normal traffic, I hear a rattle coming from what seems like just behind the front seats. This only happens when moving, at any speed. It doesn't seem to get louder or more frequent with higher speeds. It sounds like a small ball-peen hammer hitting the bottom of the floorpan.

I don't know if this is exhaust related or a bad insulator on a shock or strut or something...

Any ideas? I searched and couldn't locate anything.

It sounds like just something rattling against the bottom. Maybe a heatshield or something. Check the exhaust and see.

i bet i know what it is...crawl under the car, and rip the heatshield off the top of the catalytic converter...mine was doing the same noise, but it would go "ting ting ting" and rattle when the car was idling and accelerating...ripped the shield off and all is quiet now except for the loud stainless muffler i have, and the damn dash rattling and squeaking all the time..
