Headline Reads: E-test ruins boy's life

That's it, I won't try and make my car pass the e-test anymore. This is the 5th e-test, and after stumping the deal as to why it won't pass, I'm not spending another penny on that scam. I'm in Ottawa, and I'm looking to get rid of my car maybe for parts, who knows. Anyone need some stuff from a Cayenne Red Met 96 Z24? Motor and tranny are strong, great body, well cared for.....just doens't like e-tests.

I believe he's talking about an emissions test. I had no idea that Ontario wants to get emissions tests on cars now. Damn Kyoto Accord!!!

I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....
1) Breaking things is expensive, and
2) Horsepower isn't cheap.

We dont have emission test here...

Actually they just got rid of them a few years ago, now they're talking about bringing them back.

I'd like around $2500. It's in immaculate shape. E-mail me at n4s@hotmail.com and we'll setup a meeting....

An E test is exactly that, an emissions test. They take the specs for how much crap should be coming out the back end of your car considering it's age and tell you if you pass or fail. It's not for all of Ontario, only parts of it like Toronto and Ottawa as well as their outlying areas. Its an effort to reduce smog in densly populated parts of the province. and collect another $35 from each car on the road every 2 years.

As far as not passing goes, you can still get a condistional pass. I think the most they can make you spend on repairs for a conditional pass is $500. Then your good for another 2 years.

A couple of points I'll make to anybody in Ontario that needs to take the test....

1)Run a tank of fuel system cleaner (the whole thing before you fill up again) this will ensure that your car isn't burning off some of that junk while it's being tested.

2) Make sure your car is up to proper operating temp. If you have to wait for the car to be taken it, park it out front and let it idle. Keep that needle up.

3)Make sure you're running the right gas. Higher Octane gas is not gonna get you passed, your car is not designed to burn it. Fill up with good ol' 87 octane.

4)Change your oil. Do it a few days beforehand if you haven't done it in the last month or so.

5) Don't let the kid touch your car. The e-test equipment is complicated and difficult to figure out. The 16 year old at Canadian Tire might not know how to use it properly. If they fail you, find out why. Then take your car to another place and get them to test it. (It's $35 that could save you hundreds in unneccesary work, shell out the extra coin) Make sure that if both tests have you failing that it's for the same reason.

Good luck with it. I suggest taking your car into Oil Changers. They do E tests now and it's a nice alternative to Canadian Tire. Or if you like CT, the one on Oglvie rd in the east end is where I took my car and I haven't had any problems yet.

Grab a blow torch and heat up the catalyic convertor that'll make any car on the road pass! I got this trick from my auto teacher, the cat activates at a certain temp so heat is the answer to solve emission problems.

in Ohio if you spend 300$ on (repairs) they will pass you and then you only need to bring in the paper work after that to get a waiver every other year.

i have used a bottle of 90% rubbing alcohol to lower my emissions. and as far as warming the car you also don't want to let the emissions build up in the exhaust system so if you do let it set for extended period to warm up then rev it around 3000 rpms to blow it out. my e-test our done at the dmv and they got signs outside all over the place giving pointers on how to ensure proper testing. but DE now does an OBD2 testing on cars so equiped.

the view is all the same unless your the lead dog.

In NY, they let your car cool off, then when its cold, Start it up and check your emissions with a warming up cat, to get your "real" report.
