Stupidity is leading cause of #3 bearing failure!!

.......At least in my case.

So this is what happens when you're working 2 jobs with a total of 60 hours a weeks, have a wife and kid at home, and projects to finish up around the house. Somethings gotta give, and usually it's the things you feel you can put off a little longer. For me, that was my routine maintenance. I went a little over on my mileage inbetween oil changes, and although I know my car consumes a bit of oil, I neglected to check it. I kept telling myself I'd do it tommorrow, but tommorrow was never today, so it didn't get done. The part of me who is anal about such things has vanished due to work related stress. I even stoppped glancing at the oil light around left turns, a habit I got into as soon as I realized how inefficient the stock oil pan baffling is. That is, I stopped looking until it was glaring me in the face on the way to work. I wasn't even turning left! I thought to myself, "what the hell is going on?". And before my tired mind could process just what this little red light was trying to tell me, I heard the faint rapping of a spun bearing over the low volume of the morning talk show plaing on the stereo. Damn. I was always the guy who condecended upon the poor SOB's who spun their #3 bearing, and here I was, in the middle of my own folly. To tell the complete truth, I have no idea just which bearing it was. It could be 1, 2, or 4 for that matter. I'll never know, because that motor is gone. Never tore it apart, never took pics for all you auto-masochistic pervs. The only work I did was taking off my N20 kit. The dealer did the rest. Makes me glad I spent the extra $1200 on that extended warranty. So, at least there's a happy ending, even if the loaner car they gave me WAS a minivan, eeek!

I did the exact same thing in my silver Z and I'm right smack dab in the middle of an engine swap. I took my old one apart and right there it was #3 laughing at me because I neglected to change my oil.

I Just had the same problem though it wasnt my cav, It was my saturn that i bought three days prior. When i bought the car it was because my cav is in the shop for a while and i needed a ride to work and back. So I pick up the car and ruch off to work already being that i was late. Then I say to myself i should really check the oil. I then said well i got sat morn off i'll change it then. Well Fri night rolled around and on the way to work as im pullin in I downshift and when the rpm's went up the motor shut off. She wouldnt start at frst so i said that id mess with it after work. Then after work she fired right up. I left and on my way out my buddy with his 318 dakota wanted to race so I hammered it and the next thing I know, The dreaded bearing knock occurs, and it was damn bad. Well thankfully That POS SOHC is gone and now I have the more favorable, and powerful twin cam. And now I check the oil everyday. My lesson was learned but my buddy with his 96 Z has the #3 bearing problem, But hes so bad that he has had 4 motors in 3 months because of that f*ckin bearing.

Not now, but someday!

i learned with my first engine...i do oil changes every 3000kms so theirs no real problem annymore..plus i don't drive like a fool....byt the way whats the reason for this problem..was it a too expensive recall?or what?

They won't recall anything unless its a safety issue. I have a '99 Chevy Venture van with the 3.4 V6 and the leaking intake manifold gasket. It can leak into the oil (then you're screwed) or externally. Mine is external, you can't see it, but you can smell it when the engine is warm and you have to fill the resevoir every 1-2 weeks. This happens on virtually every GM 3.1/3.4 V6 (http://www.gm-v6lemons.com/)and GM won't do anything about it, at least not for me.
Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent, but unless its a safety issue, there will be no recall. They could care less if you blow up your engine.

So you neglected your car, blew your engine, toor off your nitrous mods and expect GM to cover it under warranty? And I wonder why it's so hard to get any warranty work done at dealers these days...

Not quite. Actually, it's not covered by GM. It's covered by the optional warranty I purchased at the used car dealer I bought my car from. And if the damage was from nitrous use (which it wasn't) I do have the class to fix it myself. So far I've done 2 major repairs myself that I could have gotten done under warranty, but I know it was because of racing (clutch, and trans rebuild). I have no qualms about rebuilding an engine (not new territory to me) but I felt that this was a bit premature, even considering the circumstances.

Oh, and Smokey, real men put strong enough rods in their engine in the first place so that they don't throw them, lol!

So, where do I get this membership card, hmmm?

Just have to keep an eye on the oil's condition, look for shavings of bearing...that's about all you can do. If it's gonna spin one, it's gonna do it.

But like I've always said, if you're keeping up with your maintenaince, and not keeping it above 5800 RPM for long periods of time, it should never be a problem. It was my own neglect that brought this on for me.

Nice club, but mine spun number 1,3 and 4 bearings.

Ya it is mostly because of low oil. Low oil with moving parts causes friction and so something has to give.
Nitro I still think the engine is strong as hell. But like all engines you have to maintain it. From the looks of it, you forgot that part man.

Sorry to hear this.
