hey just as a follow up for some of you who replace stock header-back piping and then run into check engine light probs..... i had removed the straight through 2.25in cat and replaced it with a catco odbII compliant 2.25 in cat, and the check engine light was still on... but i had previously tried to use a o2-sim from caspertronics (sp?) and left it on...

once i removed the o2 sim, within 2 days the check engine light went out... so long story short no need for a new header right away... although i'll probably get one eventually.....

so: step one- get odbII compliant cat, step 2- do not get o2 sim

my $.02 on a forgotten subject <br>

A couple things...

1) I know I'm really late replying to the rainwater in the intake question, but here are my non-guru thoughts... A little rain water on your filter won't do any harm to the engine, water injection injects a much higher volume of water than rain. However if your cold air intake is close enough to the ground that a puddle could splash and soak the filter, you could get enough water in one stroke to hydrolock a cylinder which would do a good job of bending engine parts. =) It's pretty hard to do I'd say but if your intake is almost touching the ground I'd put a shield around it.

2) I've got a couple questions about work on a 2.2L...

I'm helping my buddy with his '96 Sunfire (2.2L 5 speed), it was leaking a little coolant from the head gasket and you could smell coolant coming out the exhaust according to him. Anyway last weekend we took the head off and sure enough there was a small crack in the headgasket right where it was leaking.

We've cleaned the surfaces well, but I was wondering if it's worth getting a thinner headgasket. I'm not a GM guy so I don't know how close your valve clearances are, if you'd have to adjust the lifters, that kinda thing. My experience is with SOHC and DOHC toyotas (mostly 4A-GZEs, and now my quad cam 1UZ-FE) so bear with my limited lifter knowledge.

This engine has 200,000 km on it and the bores appear to be in good shape. I don't have an inside mic so I couldn't measure if the cyls were out of round or not, but they appear to clean.

Also, there's a lot of carbon buildup in the exhaust manifold. I've got a die grinder and I was thinking about port matching the manifold to the head, but is it really worth it???

Not trying to make a race car here, just thinking if we can clean things up a bit while the head's off....

Thanks in advance, and since this is my second post I'll say hi and introduce myself...

I'm Aaron, live up near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm a construction engineer and in my spare time I get drunk and work on cars... =) I'mm 23, owned 8 cars, all of them Toyotas ('78 and '82 celica, '85 mr2, '89 mr2 supercharged, '85 supra w/6M-GE, an '87 camry beater, and my old girl a '92 4 cyl camry that went 410,000 km before I sold it). My current car is a Lexus SC400/Toyota Soarer 4.0 GT.

Take it easy everyone,

Aaron

p.s. Thanks for the advice on this car...

if you car has a spash gaurd, the stock wheel well liner, then it lessens the chance. however some intakes are put wo where if the car was on a lift, you can easily see the intake filter.... no splash guard <br>

WHAT SIZE TB DO I HAVE?

here are the TB sizes for 3rd gens.

2.2L 52mm

2.4L 52mm

2.3L 56mm

Ecotec 2.2L 58mm

if you want a bigger TB than you have now, for the 2200 and 2.4 people, you can take yours or a spare TB to a LOCAL (meaning you have to open your phone book and call around ) machine shop and have em bore it out and make a new plate for you.

some people here have also taken the 2.3L TB and put it on the 2200. there are plenty of posts to SEARCH, but the info is already posted. people have posted what they had to do to get it to fit cause the 2.3 TB only has two vaccum lines in the back... not 3 like the 2200... so there will have to be some modications done. and i know the info is there.

use terms in the search like

"TB swap"
"2.3 2200"
"2200 56mm"

and also check the archives which can be searched by switching where it says ALL DATES to ARCHIVE.

or you can contact NITRO aka Jarrett Baier who is a member of JBO. he has 59mm plates that anyone can buy. and also does the work on the sides at times... look him up and send him and email to contact him

now these cars can benefit, from swapping TBs but remember dont go too big with TB;s... 62 mm is the most some will ever need and most wont even need that much if you wanna keep punch off the line....for most 56-59 is prime for a good mix of both worlds.

for the ecotecs you have the same option, but as stated in the beginning of the thread around page 1 or 2, the links of who offer TBs if you cant find anyone.

WHAT IS A VALVE JOB AND WHERE DO I GET IT?

a valve job is normally done when installing new valves or freshening up the ones you already have.

the job that is done are angles grinded into the valve seats and also the valves themselves which help the valve to seal as well as let air flow past there...

there are three main types of valve jobs available.

3- ANGLE.... dont be fooled, while its a good choice.... this is what is STOCK on our cars from the factory.

5-ANGLE..... a bit better than 3, but some say it has longevity issues. for the most part that is true, since its more angles in the same space. per angle thats less strength. but you should get a decent amount of mileage from the car with maintainence.

MULTI-ANGLE or RADIUS .... this is what i currently opted for on the new engine. not alot of places do this as its more skill to do than the first two.

below i have listed two links that give a bit more insigh as well as pictures in the first link as to prices on some of these.

http://www.foursnmore.com/Valve%20jobs.htm

and

http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/ar119854.htm

some of the companies like RSM, CAVALIER CONNECTION, MANTAPART, and JBODYPERFORMANCE all do this.... and offer a complete assembled head.

also like the TB machining, the local machine shops in your area can do this as well.

For TB, here are some more calculations that may help some who are looking for volumetric efficiency ordeals and such. credit goes to gary howell of howell automotive.

Quote:

49mm TB flows 252 cfm
52mm TB flows 283 cfm
55mm TB flows 317 cfm
60mm TB flows 377 cfm

i would or will do the equations for volumetric efficiency, but as of right now i am not sure what to use for "MAX RPM" being that our fuel cut offs are 6500 for the DOHC engines, and 6000RPM for the 2.2OHV's

once i find out the MAX rpms' i will do the equations and post em....

Once you complete those, you are set to start the vehicle and tune! I recommend starting the vehicle BEFORE setting your fuel curve.

I hope these instructions get people under way on there install. Its a great unit, and its about DAMN TIME SOMEONE GOT ONE TO WORK ON A J-BODY THAT CAN ANSWER HOW!

Just be extremely careful and make your adjustments in +/- 1% increments when tuning. Remember this unit is the real deal and can make or break your cars performance and engine.

Enjoy everyone!!!!!!!!!
Most people that have this on there cav will tell you that ever car is different so go get it installed and tuned by a professional

Sorry I can not host the pic that goes with this

First off, frickin awesome.

Second, does it give you an option for stock fuel curve? I just want to get it installed and set to stock setting(s), then take it to a dyno for some real tuning.

Ok I just tried to do the Tach install like the directions said, but I found that a gray wire comes from that terminal on the PCM instead of a White wire, and my tach doesn't work with splicing into that wire. So then I have heard that I need a Tach adapter to make it work, and is this the same wire that I would splice into for the proper signal?

Maybe I should just buy the Z24 cluster and do that swap.

So event- does the 94 or so cfm make much diff on a N/A setup with a WAI & exhaust?
what kind of gains?

Also, when you say the 2.2l eco cuts off the gas @ 6500rpms, does this apply to manual tranny? if that happens, how do you over-rev on accident?

And this is my "im a dumbass newb question"-
what is the true redline for the 04 cav 5spd?
the tach has like a dashed red and then solid red area...
where do we stop before we get into over-revving?

thanks!

it can make a diference, but along with cfm, you have to factor in velocity and volume as well.

you are to add like 10% to it to get a range of 110% to compensate for basic bolt ons... its on howells site for finding volumetric efficiency for an engine, which i cant really do as i dont know the MAX of the engine itself...

the cutoff is for all cars, its what the computer cuts fuel at. auto or manual.

full redline, not sure as of yet, when i do find all of them, i will do the volumetric calculations and post em.

in stock form, the computer cuts at 6500rpm... you can go past it, if you like downshift mistakenly, but the computer cuts fuel either way once you go over it...

What are you upgrading them for? Stock injectors and fuel system is good to support just about any bolt on mod you can do.
