Asking for advice on cams is really like pulling teeth.. no one really wants to speak up.

It really all depends on what the car is being used for, what are the plans with the car, daily drivin, type of fuel, what you expect or what you want to see for results, etc etc etc... let us know and we can pick out a cam for your application

the JBP Stage 2 cam will throw you a check-engine light on your ld9 and offers a 10-15 hp gain. my advice would be the "secret" cams swap, it's much cheaper in the long run and just as good of gains.

JBP has a stage 1 cam similar to what you have just a little more lift on the intake and little more duration on the exhaust side...i'd stick with what you have...you might want to try to get a LO Intake cam and have the hex/ cam sensor pickup machined...then you'll have matching cams (which will give you .375 lift instead of .360 which you have now)

what are you talking about? i have the stage 2 cams for my 2.4 and they never threw a code. i also know two other people with them who never threw a code. do you have these cams in your car??
Re: what cams should i get

The JBP stage ones may be pretty good to go with.

The exhaust cams is the same as the secret cams but the intake is different.

the secret cam swap (intake) are
200 degrees @0.50 0.360 lift only a 0.006 difference

JBP Cams intake
200 degrees @0.50 0.375 lift

Stock cams
198 Degrees @0.50 0.354 lift

That intake came is the same at the LD2 engine.

I am going to get an LD2 Cam and have the cam sensor put on the cam and the hex drive put on there. Hopefull that will be less than JBP. I have the secret cam swap. Good swap but looking to see if this is going to work.

JBP Stage 1~ 200 degrees duration, .375 lift (Intake)
208 degrees duration, .375 lift (exhaust)

Secret Cams~200 degrees duration, 360 lift (Intake)
200 degrees duration, 375 lift (Exhaust)

The JBP cams have .015 more lift on the intake side and 8 degrees more duration on the exhaust.

They are very similar.

If this is a daily driven car that rarely gets to the track, stick with the secret cams, or the stage 1 cams from JBP. Stage 2 cams give you useless power for a daily driver...Most of the power is made after 4000rpm, and if you rev the 2.4 that high every time you accelerate, you will have som serious longevity issues on the bottom end.

everything in the engine has been replaced, new trany, crank, bearings, everything is all new. i just want more power, the nitrous is coming next month and the turbo will probally be next winter. like i said im thinking of going more aggresive than the secret cams that i already have

I understand that, but just because you have a more aggressive grind, does not mean you will have more performance where you need it. A stage 2 grind does not deliver very good performance from idle to 3500rpm...after that it hits its efficient range and really starts to make power. So if you are driving the car on the street every day, you will seem to lag at the lower rpms...if you are all about higher rpm power, then by all means go for it.

If you were wanting a more aggressive cam profile that will pull hard after 4000rpm, have a set of the 2.3L HO cams modified to work (and remove the rpm limiter so you can rev to 7000rpm, because the HO cams make a lot of power above the 6250rpm mark). You can pay the money to get the JBP stage 2 cams, but I don't know how they perform and cannot vouch for them. The enormous amount of duration they carry though leads me to believe they are above 4000rpm like the HO cams are.

Just ask protomec about the HO cams.

All in all it is up to you, I just figured I would share my information with you so you can make a more informed decision.

You may say 0.15 more but compared to stock cams

the difference from stock cams is 0.006 lift for the secret cams intake

the difference from stock cams is 0.021 lift on the LD2 cams.

The lift difference s more noticeable when you compare it to stock.

He was comparing the secret cams to the LD2 or JBP cams. Comparing them to stock shows a better comparison to the lift on the intake cam.

Not exactly. The stock cams are profiled to make their peak power and torque within the 6250rpm red line. The stage 1 cams will create a power increase throughout the powerband, however the peaks will be shifted to the right...or to higher rpms. Stage 2 cams shift the peaks even more and dont do as well at making power at lower rpms due to the longer duration.

Bigger is definitely not always better when it comes to purchasing a camshaft for your car. You have to evaluate where you want to be making power. Daily driven cars will want the cams which are more efficient towards the lower end of the rpms, whereas race cars want the higher end power achieved from long duration and high lift.

A cam's duration and lift determine how much air flows into and out of the combustion chamber during a cycle. If the cam is open longer and further, more air can come in and go out which translates to more power. More air=more power. However air flow velocities decrease with more lift and duration, causing the equation to be a little unbalanced...suddenly the higher lift doesn't matter as much because the air is moving slower. The rpms have to be increased to compensate. Thus the larger the lift and duration, the higher the rpm where the peak power and torque are made. This is why superchargers and turbos love the bigger cams, because they can flow a lot of air, without having to worry about losing velocity since they are forcing it in there anyway.

The whole air velocity thing applies to exhaust systems as well...exactly why a 3" exhaust system on a NA 4 cylinder will cause a power loss. The exhaust has no velocity and loses its scavenging effects.

personaly i think that the stage one cams are better if your not gonna extremely mod your car. If your car is highly modded like as in turbo or super then the stage two will do hella better

hey doubler what are your track times with your current mods

As far as the Nitrous and turbo are concerned, the JBP would be a better profile, especially the exhaust cam. The longer exhaust duration and lift will allow the extra pressure from both to bleed off better, building more torque and HP. Be sure you degree the cams and install them with about 112*-114* lobe centers to take full advantage of the extra cylinder chage.

JBP Stage 1 that is.

ok with all that has been said here, I want to get a good boost in HP. I was thinking of getting the stage 2 cams. I want to get an RSM charger in the future. From other posts that I have read I basically see that RSM and JBP stage 2 cams are almost the same. I was told that JBP Stage 2 won't work with a supercharger. Craig at RSM said they are running their cams with their charger and have had no problems. Opinions? another question is this........if I got JBP cams with a SC grind on them how would my car run with them installed until I get the SC?

can you not add the w41 profile cam to an ld9?

It will not run well at all. So unless you convert it to OBDI, and use the 2.3L chip, you cannot get any benefit, and will actually lose performance from using the W41 cam profile.
