New Header installation - having some problems
Sunday, March 06, 2005 9:24 PM
Hey guys!

I just joined up here at jbody although i have been going to this site for a couple months now. I drive a 2001 sunfire 2.2L, and have WAI, Cat back exhaust, and just recently had headers installed. I have pacesetter brand headers, whenever i go over speed bumps or am just casually driving i will hear noises from the bottom of my car... i know this isn't normal. I went to the place where i got the headers installed and they said i just needed to get the header bolts tightened more. After reading the sticky i am pretty sure i need a flexpipe. How exactly is is the flexpipe installed in the aftermarket pacesetter pipe? would the shop just cut the flexpipe from my old OEM pipe and weld it into the pacesetter pipe? If someone could shed some light on the subject it would be great! also should i consider getting motor mounts? I don't really know what motor mounts are so if anyone could help me that also that would be sweet. I never knew the installation of these headers would be such an on-going thing! but thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out!

you might want the motor mounts to keep your exhaust from moving
they are the parts that attach your moror to the frame

as for the flexpipe not really sure how to explain

DEFINITLEY get motor mounts. i dont have a header, but everywhere ive read, only bad things happen when you dont have them, and use a header. carcustoms.net has em for fairly cheap, thats where i got mine. easy as f*ck install too.

pacesetter IS a direct bolt in. make sure you tightened everything up. also make sure you get some motor mounts asap. call karo about those. also, i dont think the stock flex pipe will work since it is only 1.5 inch diameter and you now have 2.25

the header down pipe comes down to low to the ground, thats the sound you here going over bumps, it scrapes i had the same problem with the pacesetter header for my 95 2.2

my down pipe dosent go too low... its tuked right up under the engine great fit couldnt get and higher... the stock exhast was lower than my setup is....

you probly should check to see if the bolts to the head(8) are tight and the bolts to the down pipe(2)...

also.... get the motor mounts...great investment...

i didnt like them when i first got them but you get used to the vibs and it saves you from buying a new header evey month and you get the power to the ground better...

i would recommend getting the motor mounts asap, and then when you have time, find a flex pipe. you dont NEED both, but it never hurts to be a little cautious.

it will fit but the pipe is smaller on the stock; mm might fix issue where is it hitting...? you shouldnt need a flex pipe if you have the mounts

the 95 and 96 cavs didnt have the hanger bars like the 97-up does unless the subframe was replaced

and for what ever reason , when they tested they only had the 95 or 96 in for the testing , and why a bracket was made , im not sure of

but added a bracket to the pipe and to the frame would pick the system up , and prevent any problems

you need the upper insert , and the lower mount , you gotta internet them or call about them , no local stores will have them , as they are a aftermarket part

Alright.. i just ordered the engine mounts from carcustoms.net... after i put these in this should fix my problem right? should i still install a flex pipe or shoudl it be fine after i install the new motor mounts?

hey buddy i can tell you that the problem is the stock motor mounts i guarantee it. I have the obx and its basically the same design. they are already designed to flex so u dont need the flex pipe. U definetly need the motor mounts. i am currently installing them as we speak. the stock mounts cant handle the pressure from the header. same thing happend to me. get them from karo asap takes like three days.
