Header / Converter CEL question
Friday, September 10, 2004 5:13 PM
Hey guys, I'm sure this was asked before, but a quick search didn't turn up much... I have a Pacesetter Header, and Magnaflow highflow Cat, all was well for about 3 months. Now I have a constant check engine light. I scaned the code and got low converter efficency (420) bank 1. Sense then i tried replacing the O2 sensors twice once with AC Delco, and once with Bosch both throw the light after a week or so. I was just wondering if anyone on the JBO had any suggestions? or if I need to use a simulator which i heard is kinda a waste. Any help you guys can give me is appreciated big time... Thanks guys.

sims are a waste especially if you have a cat....

it can be a few things, running lean, or a faulty first o2 sensor. it can also be an iat sensor or even just wiring mishaps. check for frays, the normal issues with wiring. connections as well. <br>

Ya I checked over the wiring pretty good, everything was good, the first sensor seems to be reading ok, never had a problem with it, ya think it could be a problem with the Cat itself?

possibly. with that code it can mean the sensors are reading off, or it can mean the cat itself is faulty. <br>

I'm willing to bet your new cat is too "free flowing" and therefore the sensors think it's not working right. It's not cleaning the exhaust enough to satisfy the computer, therefore it sets the CEL.

Try a different cat.

I thought that aftermarket cats didnt have the bung in them for the 2nd 02 sensor?

yeah magnaflow is the only company with OBD2 certified cats right now

and the put the o2 sensor really close to the cat bed , and im guessing its helping with the code for the highflow cat

mine is throwing the same CEL, i'm not sure what it could, i had to get a new O2 sensor for the bung before the cat, but i just put my stock one back on after the cat, i'm not sure exactly what it could be. though i do know one thing i'am adding a magnapack to my exhaust setup. join the club.

sorry to bring this post back but ummm....

ive got the magnaflow cat from gravana dont know what MF p/n it is....its throwing the CEL... i havent scaned it but i know its the cat because i had everything else in before i put it in the day i got it welded in here comes the CEL....

i know there are o2 sims but i dunno if i wanna do that becasuse it will be sending false info to the computer that contols my air/fuel mix..... wouldnt that decrease performance and mpg??? but i dunno if i wanna just let it be either... for the same reason...

is the only thing i can do get a new cat??

well gravana has magnaflow's cat part number 91035. you can get it at www.justmagnaflow.com for less than you can at gravana.

i have a similar setup to you. i have the pacesetter 4-1 header, a magnaflow cat, a magnaflow resonator, 2.25 pipe, and a dynomax muffler.

i have the cat i listed above. you need a different one. this i got straight from event because he used to have this problem and told me what he did to correct it.

if you did a cat back system and a cat, then part number 91035 would be fine. but since we have a header, the exhaust system runs hotter. so basically, the inside of our cats has melted, and no longer does its job. event said to replace the cat we have with part number 94035- same thing as the one we have, just its longer. this way, some of the material inside will melt, theres no avoiding that. but luckily, there will be enough left for the cat to do its job and it shouldnt throw a code.

the cat we need, part number 94035, runs $67.51 i believe, at www.justmagnaflow.com. justmagnaflow gives free shipping for orders over $50. enjoy!

the after cat o2 doesnt effect the fuel tuning of the car

it only moniters the cat

So when i get my weapon r header i want part number 94035?

So the sensor only monitors it? So if you get on O2 simulator it just tells the motor that everything is running fine?

of course i just bought the magnaflow 91035. you think it will throw the cel with 2200 motor, hp racing 4-2-1 header, the 91035 and borla single exhaust dual tip?

Re: Header / Converter CEL question
Tuesday, March 08, 2005 5:23 PM
I'm running a 2200 with a 4-1 pacesetter, borla, 2.25 through, and the magnaflow cat. No problems on the original o2 sensor.

the only thing that really matter, DONT BE CHEAP WITH YOUR CATALYST CONVERTER!

if you dont want to get cel go to a shop and ask what they put on these car...

or stay stock.
