2.3/2.4 oil system swap
Friday, December 17, 2004 5:49 AM
I know a lot of people are saying this swap free's up a fair bit of power on your bottom end ( if your the one with the 2.4) but how is the over all performance of the oiling system? I'm sure GM didn't say , let's see if we can trim a little hp of this one, I got my ld9 pulled and was wondering if it worth the swap or to just make up hp with the turbo system I already have planed for it
Slidding out of control isn't the problem, it's just that sudden stop at the end.

there is a defenite increase in oiling system performance, from my understanding there is no longer oil starvation above the rev limit, and it produces much higher oil pressures. Not to mention it frees up approx. 15hp when you remove the balance shafts
Dreams do come true....

The 2.4 oil system simply sucks.
I'm sure GM had no intentions of making it that bad, but with the balance shafts in the way, they had to make the pump much smaller.
To make up for its lack of size they drive it twice as fast.
Too much speed combined with too small a pump= oil starvation at higher (5500+) rpms.
The 2.3 pump does not have this problem.
I agree the pump swap is benefical.... but what I dont understand is this oil starvation problem. WIth my engine running 6200 rpms under load I still see around 70psi of oil pressure.
Well I gonna do it, I got the engine half pulled out anyway, might as well take the block down to the machine shop too. thanx
What kind of gauge are you seeing this on?
This is on an autometer Phantom guage and if you believe its a gauge issue I can assure you its not. As during some testing I was doing on one of the other 5 , 2.4's i have sitting here, I pulled a relatively similar reading around the same RPM range with a completely different guage.
not enough info.
Mechanical or Electric?

In car is electric Autometer Phantom

My test/monitor box also uses an electric guage but a Nordskog Pro Series Analog guage.

I dont know what your trying to prove here but i'm telling you what I got from it.
My point- Mechanical gauges are typically significantly faster than electric ones.
For the most part, a mechanical gauge is easily spotted because the needles move 270degrees. Electrics will only move 90degrees.

Only recently have some really fast electric gauges become available, but they are pretty expensive. Generally fast electric gauges cost $200+. These are also, now, 270degrees movements.

So, even if you have a typical electric pressure gauge, and it happens to be a quicker one, here's the comparison.....

So its pretty hard to see the pressure dropping off on the electric gauge.
Typically on a 2.4, the pressure peaks at 65psi till it passes 5500 rpm. After that it drops off. Generally it will drop only 10psi by 6200 rpm. This is also after the engine has been fully warmed up and using factory recommended 5W-30 oil.
Ok, well while yes that point would work for my in car guage, but here is a picture of the guage i use in my test/monitoring box... which is a Nordskog.

notice the long sweep of this electric guage

And as I was saying before I'm seeing pressure of 70psi, so perhaps thats why you show a drop and I do not.

It still shows no noticable drop, withing 2-3psi of initial readings after reaching 6200.

Even if you were to drop 10psi at that RPM your still running 55psi which is rather healthy not to mention most people on this board will never see sustained RPMS that high, unless they are racing circle track.

How about does anyone have a picture of the modified engine block for this swap? Maybe a step-by-step with pictures? I know there are about 100 posts with directions, but none have pictures. They really help on something more complicated like this.

but isn't it better to have balanced shaft instead of not balanced????
or it doesn't matter?

the crank is counter weighted and balanced so it doesnt matter.
but why did they balanced it in the 2.4????
If it doesn't matter, I might do that mod as well. But this look very hard to do and i'm affraid not finding people that know enough about quad4 that could do that mod to my engine!!!!!

One word: Harmonics.

They put them in to reduce harmonics which "cause premature bearings wear". The way I see it, without them engines have lasted well over 100k miles and with them we spin bearings all the time. Only reason I am taking them out of the engine I am building is I want to squeeze as much HP out of it I can. I do not see any issues with them affecting the life of the motor by not being there. No more oil restrictions, consistent oil pressures means more to me than some harmonics which may or may not affect the engines.

ok, because if i built the engine and do that mod, I want it to be strong and indestructible. In fact i'm not the one that will built it, i will find someone to do it, and i have no money to redo all the thing because engine blew....

yeah I got the bare block on the stand downstairs right now. Doing a bit of research on how to get this mod done, but am hoping someone will provide some pictures. If not, I will just go with the instructions I have.

The one in the car right now is a 99. The one in my basement all freshly washed and oiled...well I dont know I will ask the guy I bought it from. Not sure that it matters. I mean as far as the heads go, the water passages are a little smaller on the earlier years, but they are all interchangeable. I am running a 96 head on my car now.

You know I put up a classified requesting a part and it took 1 hour to have someone offer it and have me pay for it. Nice...quickest working classified ever!

Jason...

Who did the machine work on your balance shaft removal?

I don't have any machine work done yet. The pictures I have is from a friend of mine in Canada

Actually I don't even have an extra motor yet, but hopefully I will pickup one next week
