2000 2.4 Engine Swap
Thursday, December 01, 2005 8:06 AM
i have a 99 cavalier z24 and the engine that is in it right now is screwed up due to me allowing someone else to drive it. is it possible to put a 2000 2.4 engine in a 99 without any major complications. i found one and i wanted to put a supercharger on it and they are for the 2000 -2002 Cavaliers. also would i have to put a transmission from the same year in and would it be a better transmissioin. thnx

transmissions are different, a lot of wiring is different i believe. and of course you will need the 00+ PCM. People are running the GM charger kit on 96-99s with a litle work. Just search bro

The 99 and 2000 engine are exactly the same, you don't have to swap transmissions or PCM's.

The only thing that LOOKS different from those years is the master cylinder. I dont know if thats important in the swap or not.

the transmissions are different, but you dont need to change them. it'll bolt up the same. the one thing you should be concerned with is the flywheel/clutch/release bearing. those are definitely different. The 95-99 had a recessed clutch, that would sit 'inside' the flywheel, as the 00+ which had a flat flywheel, which bolted flush with the clutch. This causes the release bearing to over extend and it'll blow guaranteed. I have a 99, put in an 00 engine, left the 00 clutch on, two months later I had to replace the release bearing. thats all I have to suggest. Even though its an 00+ motor, the S/C still needs the 00+ BCM, wont work on the 95-99 system.

^ You need to match the clutch to the transmission and flywheel, not the engine.

The transmissions did change, as was mentioned above, but the bellhousing pattern is the same.

the transmissions did change

but the motors didnt , so swaping just the motor , is straight foward

if he wanted to change the trans , he be pretty much screwed , because of all the parts you would have to swap over , plus cutting the trans mounts off , and welding new 1's on

What year did they change the knock sensor? 99 or 2000? As already stated the motor will go in fine and run on the 99 ECU fine.
Also like stated to run the GM charger, you need other things, the motor is not the key, but the BCM, ECU etc...

The knock sensor changed in 99 I believe.

You can run the charger without the BCM and ECU from a 2k+, you just won't be able to get the reflash.

sorry 'Shifted' didn't put the whole story. the release bearing went becuase the clutch wasn't correct. when we had the tranny off, we realized the 00+ clutch/flywheel was on there, luckily my friend had kept the 95-99 flywheel I had given to him. I got a stage 2 spec, which came with the release bearing, why not do it all right? got it resurfaced and we were good to go. But as shifted said, the flywheel/clutch/release bearing needs to be matched up with the transmissionn.

So the engine swap should be no trouble if they are exactly the same. But i still want to get a new transmission because my uncle drove this car for a while and the transmission isnt in the best shape. Would a newer Transmission out of a 95-99 work fine. and cause no problems with the engine. Also i wanted to put The supercharger on what all do you have to do to the 95-99 ecu's and the other stuff that was mentioned to make it run the best it can.
thnx
