4.3 Vortech TT AWD

can anybody give me a good estimated 1/4 time for a 4.3TT @ about a good 20 psi in a 2nd gen cavi? assuming this swap is possible(i would like to see this done at some point in time) as stupid as this may sound to some people, idc, there's gotta be some people out there with the same thought as me.....

you know, you can stick your dick in cup of Acid, doesn't make it a good @!#$ idea.
why take the @!#$tiest engine and an unecessary turbo and an inefficient drivetrain and somehow integrate it into a unibody car. what a waste of bandwidth this thread is

You have to shoehorn a 3800 into the engine bay, but you plan on sticking in a 4.3 vortec? Not that I'm calling into question your mechanical prowess, but you even spelled vortec wrong and seem to be ignoring the huge problems associated with cramming such a large engine into a FWD vehicle. Assuming you do an AWD conversion (and pay that absurd amount of money associated with it) and defy the laws of spatial relationships and get the motor in there, why the hell would you put a vortec in there, why would you turbo a truck motor, and where are you getting these imaginary parts from?

Oh yes, and there can't be an estimate on 1/4mile times, there's no precedent for such a setup and there's no way to know how what your specific setup will be, its not JUSt about a motor, there's so much more.

im not really saying that im going to do the swap....i never meant it to be completely serious. you can make a header basically any turbo would fit it if u fabricate it correctly and the rest of the piping can be all custom. as for the AWD conversion that is way out there. at least i have some peoples input on the topic. and sorry for the vortec* typo.

AWD isnt all that "out there" caviliers and Calibras in the UK have AWD, but there cavy's sre completly diffrent from ours, but they share the 2.0 OHC block with the sunbirds and the have an AWD trans for it..........I want one sooo bad.

i had no idea there was an AWD cavalier out. sounds like a nice car though. can you give me a site on them?

Hmmm I have a 4.3 sitting around with nothing to put it in...
(I really do) But there's no way I'm gonna go through the pain and money of putting it in a J. Number one its not that great of a performance engine, Unless you have the Syclone version . They're not desgined to run past 4500, 5k RPMs. They're made for trucks not cars keep that in mind.

Yes, it is. Converting a chassis that was originally 2WD to AWD is fairly intricate. Consider the case of my beater, the '88-90 AWD Pontiac 6000. In 1990, the sticker price of the AWD models was $5500 higher than a loaded-to-the-gills FWD model, representing the R&D and extra parts costs GM incurred making it. Essentially, the car is a unique platform from the firewall back. Hardly anything of significance (excluding some interior items) are unique.

Basically, you'd be making your own platform of vehicle.

I see what your trying to say but all you really have to do is swap in a trans from a AWD car from the UK (good luck getting hold of one), put a rear axel from a s10 on your J and connect the drive shaft to the rear, the AWD trans is also a 6 speed manual. The onlyhard thing (after getting the trans from the UK) would be mounting the rear axel, which could be done in a few days with the right tools, all you need to do is make some mounts for the s10 suspension or modify the current suspension to work with the axel, our cars have solid axel now so stickin a diff in the middle wouldnt be that complicated.
But think whatever you want, I just cant see it being that hard, and you dont need to remake the hole car from the firewall back, just the rear suspension has to change, you might have to make a little clerance for the diff but thats nothing a set of tourches wont fix, subframe conectors would be a good idea to and you would have something to mount your suspension brakets to.
Rutherford, I have a few sites for them, I'll post them up when I get home

i have seen a guy that put like a 383 stroker in his 1st gen cavi and conversion to RWD. so i know the axel mount is very much possible. thanks for supporting me on this Mr. Efficiency.

i think you would be able to peel all four tires all the way until you finish your 1/4 run, so, you couldnt really estimate your time. i would always be a little different. probably high 4s, low 5s.

I'm working on swapping in a 4.3 on my Jeep, you're looking at about 300-600 dollars for a wiring harness alone.

I'm a little confused. Mebbe I don't know my stuff... But the 4.3L engine was available in a turbocharged version, along with an AWD chassis. It's called the Syclone/ Typhoon. It even used the same ecm as the LT3 turbo cars made after 86. Quarter mile times can be found on the web as well as a host of performance information.

Putting an AWD chassis under a J car isn't all that hard. You guys have to quit thinking FWD. Believe it or not, the frame from a mid 80's A car (Monte, Grand Prix, Regal, Cutlass) fits under the J car. So does the frame from an S10. And wouldn't you know... the Typhoon and Syclone are based on S10 chassis.

So who has access to one of these turbocharged AWD performance trucks to strip? Prolly no one. But no problem, as GM built quite a few AWD Astro vans with NA 4.3 power. The front differential and transfer case are similar to the S10 and can be moved to a 4x4 Blazer or pickup chassis. All that remains is to implement the turbocharger. Now the Vortec 4.3 uses a ridiculous spider injector assembly with poppet valves and plastic hoses which is buried inside the intake manifold. This may not be a good idea in a pressurized intake system, so some type of port fuel injected manifold needs to be located to replace it. One could make a pfi manifold out of a carbureted manifold, which may not be too expensive. A manifold like this would fit Vortec 4.3 heads. There are also port manifolds used with marine engines, and a patient person might find one for a reasonable price.

The hardest part of this swap might be keeping vehicle height to a minimum. But turbocharged, 4.3, and AWD aren't so impossible as they may first appear.

ok, then figure it out. what does a syclone/typhoon run in the 1/4 mile??? cause thats what a cavy body on a truck frame will run.

a lot of people talk about the s10 frame under a j and i havent figured out why people would od this. yes its the easy way out, but you have a truck frame, something meant to haul and tow with realy no regardes to handling and not that good of a ride quality. i say if your going to make a j rwd or awd, do it properly with a tube frame or back-half the car.

if i was to do an awd, it would still be a transverse engine. i would use the tranny from an awd pontiac 6000 (i think it was a th125) or use a 5 speed and somehow adapt a transfer box to it. the car would be back halfed or at least seriously streangthened and it would use an IRS setup. a rear suspention setup from a chrysler caravan awd may work after some modding.

Sharkey, the Syclone handles better than some stock J's. By removing the truck body and installing a lower J car body, you'll lower the center of gravity and greatly improve the handling. Use a convertible car, and you'll mkae things even better.

I've thought about using the AWD GP as a donor. I've also thought about importing Euro AWD components. Either route would entail using uncommon parts which might be difficult to replace if they break or fail. That's not something to stop the project, but it means that I wouldn't take the car too far from home very often.

The chrysler vans are not IRS. They are solid axle. I'd look to something like the little Honda SUV, as they seem to use lighter weight components and a fairly simple design.

You mean a Honda CRV? I wor at honda and I've seen the underside of those things a hundred times. I never thought of using it on a J car for the rear axel, if I ever get that tranny from the UK I'm going to work on putting a CRV rear end under my car. Independant rear and AWD would make that the coolest J ever If you ever do decide to do this swap I would definatly look into that, but I'm not sure how much the rear diff and the axels can take befor ethey break, and I cant see them seling performance parts for a CRV, lol
Anyway, the only problem I see in this hole project is getting the motor in the car, you cn always make custom brackets, thats the easy part, its geting the motor to fit in the bay......thats going to take so pretty major firewall modification, my Dad has a AWD Astro van with the 4.3 Vortec in it and its a pretty big motor, for our cars anyway.
