1990 Chevy Cavalier Hi Beam Switch Confusion
Sunday, January 31, 2016 10:00 AM
I had to take apart my steering column the other day for my '90 Cavalier Z24 in order to change out the ignition cylinder. In doing so, the plastic "box" that holds the tilt steering lever (behind the steering column) fell out, and with it, a little lever which I assume to be the hi beam switch (possibly called the dimmer switch... looked up part number). Now, the high beams do not work, and I have this little switch that seems to fit in the tilt steering "box". Can someone please help?

I just took a look at what a new dimmer switch looks like (http://www.carid.com/acdelco/gm-original-equipment-headlamp-dimmer-switch-actuator-mpn-d844.html?gclid=CjwKEAiA_ra1BRDV-byb_aDqpQoSJAA-ofB9NEzQ9lI-APofKNHKTGx_zoFcFMPBGZDTf9bG1IVJNRoCSL_w_wcB). Is it possible that mine broke as the steering column was being taken apart?

http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=28&i=15658&t=15658 See IF any of this post helps? As I said I never had to go beyond the turn signal assembly to fix a broken spring and the turn signal plastic.I can assure you IF frank returns HE will reply with tons of info regarding this area for sure.He is a 2nd guru as he owns many!!!!!!! I was just too tired the other day to track down this old 2013 post with some 1st gen pics that are probably identical to the 2nd.

Thank you for your response! I actually fixed the problem myself (I just wasn't fiddling around with it enough), but this post will really help me in the future if I need it!
Best Wishes

Well super and glad the info will help later too.I will say the 1st -2nd share a lot of the same components and some mild change's in between.Granted things are slower now as most people do not keep the older cars like we do.Sometimes the response can be slow, but I do try my best to offer a good solution as I frequent the site daily.I am def 1st savy but as said the 2nd share a lot in common and or symptom's of things that can be crossed to fix a issue. If you have questions or problems just post them here as it will get more eye's than the general maintenance forum as it is really focused on the 3rd gens mostly imo.
