1994 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 cylinder head
Sunday, January 19, 2014 10:31 AM
I need a replacement cylinder head for a 1994 Pontiac sunbird 2.0L. I have a replacement head from a 1992 but it has smaller combustion chambers on the head. I would like to find a direct replacement if possible. Has anyone ever replaced a cylinder head with smaller combustion chambers on a 94 2.0? Does anyone know where I may get one for this year?
I understand that this engine only ran for 93-94 engines.

What are the casting #s? The only difference is 91 and lower ,92 and up are the same.

From the 2.0 OHC engine builders guide................

"HEADS
1987-’91: The original 2.0L head had a 90209851 casting
number. It has a "modified, heart-shaped chamber."
1992-’94: The late model 2.0L head has more of an oblong, "D"
shaped chamber that increased the compression ratio while
improving quench and squish when used with the revised
piston. There are two castings; the engines originally came with
a 90400095, but the replacement head is a 90209896.
The later service head has a large, threaded boss surrounding each spark plug, probably for a threaded
heat shield that is used to protect the plug wires in some other application. The threads aren’t needed for
domestic engines, but they don’t create problems either, so GM uses this fits-all head for service parts."

Have a look at this photo, the one on the right is from the car and the one on the left is the replacement. Notice the different combustion chambers. I am thinking it will not work with the pistons in the car. Thanks for the reply.

Maybe the one on the left is a 91...does it look like it?

The one on the left is a 91 ( heart shaped ), the right is a 92 and up. ( D shaped)

Double check the "casting" numbers to verify.

Correct cylinder heads can be found on Ebay or www.car-part.com.

If your piston has a dish all the way around its a 91 or lower , a 92-94 has an "offset " small dish on the piston.
