Wilwood BBK v2.0
Saturday, December 28, 2013 7:07 PM
It started in wanting something a little different for the Cav. I noticed that Wilwood makes 6 piston kits for similar sized compact cars ( Focus ST, Mini Cooper, Fiat 500 ) but nothing for us. I do have to take in consideration that the calipers that Wilwood are using were not available when the J-body kit was released. I contacted Wilwood to see what options we have in upgrading our kit to use larger 6 piston calipers and came up with 2 options. Hopefully, I can use all parts from Wilwood's catalog, then someone can duplicate this if they wanted too

Option # 1 – Dyno Pro 6 caliper

This option has a little less cost involved since you will be using everything from the existing kit, minus calipers, pads and mounting bracket. Since the Dyno Pro 6 is a lug mount ( kit comes with a radial mount ) it would require you to also make new caliper mounting brackets. Also this caliper is not as wide as the Dyno Pro 4, so there is some space savings if using a spacer to clear caliper

Calipers:
120-10134-RH http://www.wilwood.com/Calipers/CaliperProd.aspx?itemno=120-10134
120-10135-LH http://www.wilwood.com/Calipers/CaliperProd.aspx?itemno=120-10135

List of Pads:
http://www.wilwood.com/BrakePads/BrakePadsList.aspx?padtype=6712

Option # 2 - Forged Narrow Superlite 6

This option is a little more expensive all the way around, but it allows you to keep the radial mount. I will provide a complete parts list once I get my prototype kit done

Pic of the caliper

.81” vs 1.1” 12.2” rotor

Stock hat vs SRT-4 hat

The FNSL6 caliper is available in the rotor widths ( 1.1” and 1.25” ) not the .81 used in the stock Wilwood kit. ( Everything that I am showing is referencing the 1.1” rotor. ) The 1.1 in rotor is .29” wider than the stock kit and will not clear stock knuckle alone, so the offset of the hat needs change to compensate so the pics I am showing is with SRT-4 hat ( .77” vs .50” )

Stock knuckle

Well everything looks good from this angle

Then again…not so much from this one

The rotor is not centered in the caliper in the picture above. Looks like I will have to get another hat and take some material out of the knuckle so the rotor does not hit it

Any idea what the weight of those calipers is?

I may swap to the aluminum knuckles and all Wilwood parts.

Weight of the calipers is 4 lbs 10.8 oz

SRT-4 hat is 7oz lighter than the Cav hat @ 1lb 14.7oz

The Cav hat is thicker ( different offset of .77" ) on the left vs the SRT-4 hat ( .50" offset ) on the right

I have thought about this. I was gonna call and ask them if they had a 9 pot caliper that would replace the 4 pot on just a direct bolt on...I guess this says the answer is no....

I highly doubt it Mike. I don't even have a stock wheel to try anymore

Why don't you mill the face of the bracket that way everything will come out away from the knuckle?

Yes, those are the right part numbers for option 1. If you are referring to the calipers pictured in this thread....I am using these ( http://www.wilwood.com/Calipers/CaliperProd.aspx?itemno=120-12002-BK ) which are radial mount but cannot be used with the thinner rotors. I did not provide the part numbers yet because I have not confirmed fitment

That is what I plan to do. I am looking for a local machine shop to mill the bracket for me.

Well, while I am updating threads I might as well do this one

So where I left off a few years ago, I had a Wilwood radial mount machined to the right offset

Well unforeseen by me, once the radial mount was machined the caliper no longer sat on the mount. It was not tall enough

I emailed TCE Performance and they built a custom Wilwood brake kit to my specs. 13.1 x 1.1" rotor, with 6 piston calipers ( with the same piston area as the 4 piston on the Wilwood kit )

I needed a small spacer to bolt up my 17" wheels
