Painting 2200 Valve Cover
Wednesday, September 01, 2004 6:31 PM
Hey all

I have been thinking of sanding down and painting the valve cover on my 2200 Cavalier. It looks terrible, as its painted flat grey from the factory and the surface of it is extremely rough, making it hard to clean.

I was thinking of just pulling it off, sanding it down to the metal, primer it, then paint it with spray paint, 2-3 coats or something like that. I know I have seen some 2.2 covers that have what look to be professional paint jobs (matches exterior), but I have no idea how to go about doing that. I would imagine it requires special equipment and such.

I have heard that whenever you pull off your valve cover it is a good idea to change the gasket, so if I do pull it off I will be sure to change that.

Any advice/help would be appreciated, and if anyone has any pics, that would be great too.

Thanks
your best bet is to polish or powder coat it......
Okay thanks for the replys guys -

Just a couple questions - how do you go about polishing it? I assume you use a buffer of some kind, but I don't really have one of those available to me.

Also, if you polished it up really nice, in order to keep it from dulling/corroding, could you clearcoat it?

I think I am going to either polish it or paint it (using the steps Event provided), I think both would look nice.

Thanks again

a wheel buff would be easiest... i did it once witha dremel as they offer a polishing kit.... takes a LONG time...

also you would pretty much have to clear coat it... might be better off chroming it at that point cause polished metal will be needing to be kept polished occasionally.
Well I did a little research on Dupli-Color.com (seems like a quality brand, all automotive) and I came up with a couple options.

I think I'm going to sand it down to the metal and polish it up first, see how that looks, then if I like it I will leave it like that and just clearcoat it. If not, I will probably paint it with Dupli-Color DA 1684 Chrome Aluminum, Dupli-Color CS 101 Instant Chrome, or Dupli-Color Silver Metallic so it matches my exterior paint. No matter which way I go I will Definetly clear coat it.

I also got an e-mail from TunerRevolution advertising their Chrome 2.2 Valve Covers, they look great, but unfortunately I don't have $85.00 to spend on a valve cover right now.

If anyone has any experience with Dupli-Color or the colors I listed please post, any info/tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I pulled my Valve Cover off today and got to work. Used a DeWalt drill with 3 different types of sanding/wire bits, cleaned it up real nice. I made sure I got all the old grey paint off and it was just bare, polished metal. I then washed it in the sink using Simple Green and water, then let it dry completely.

I picked up some Dupli-Color Silver Metallic Wheel paint from Wal-Mart, supposed to be good for Aluminum, Steel, and Plastic, along with resisting Heat and chemicals. Everything started out good, gave it about 4-5 light coats, and it came out looking great, almost the same color of my car. I then let the paint dry for about 45 mins. and proceeded to apply 2-3 coats of Clearcoat auto spray (also Dupli-Color).

By now it looked sweet, so I got to work putting on the new gasket and re-assembling everything. About 3 hours went by since it had been painted, it was dry, so I figured it was all good.

Well while I had everything off I cleaned my TB with 2+2 Carb/PCV cleaner, it was really dirty. So I figured why not give it a complete clean and shoot cleaner in the PCV with it running, to get all the carbon buildup and crap out of the engine. Well I put the straw into the 2200 box (hole where PCV connects) and give it a spray - damn, it blows back for some reason all over my valve cover. I immediately wipe it, BUT ALONG WITH THE CLEANER COMES MY SILVER PAINT!! I really couldn't believe it, a whole days worth of work ruined.

My Dad and I were trying to figure out what went wrong, the can lists no "curing time" or anything, and primer is not required. The only thing we could think of is that it didn't stick for some reason.

I'm really lost on this, if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
The website for the paint can be found here:
Duplicolor Wheel Coating

i;d wait atleast a day before introducing a solvent....

if you have the metalicast paint...

according to the FAQ on the site...

Quote:

METALCAST™

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. When I spray the METALCAST™ do I need to apply the Adhesion Promoter?

A. Yes, Dupli-Color® Adhesion Promoter (CP199) is recommended when spraying over chrome. In addition, scuff the surface with a red scuff pad before applying the Adhesion Promoter. Allow 15 minutes for the Adhesion Promoter to dry before applying two coats of METALCAST™.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. I want to paint my chrome valve covers with METALCAST™. Will it hold up to the engine temperatures?

A. Yes, METALCAST™ has been formulated to resist intermittent heat up to 500 degrees F, as well as resistance to oil, gas, scuffing, chipping and fading.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Do I have to use the METALCAST™ Ground Coat on chrome or bare-metal surfaces?

A. No, METALCAST™ Color works best when applied with the CP-199 Adhesion Promoter directly over scuffed chrome-like or bare-metal surfaces. The METALCAST™ Groundcoat is recommended for pre-painted surfaces only.

$85 for one valve cover? i can get two covers for my V8s for $50 a set, why does 4 banger stuff have to be more expensive? headers for my 97 2.2 are $200-$250. you only get one header. i got headers for my camaro for $95 for both sides, brand new. roller rockers for a 4 banger cost the same as rockers for a V8, and you get twice as many in the V8 set. methinks thou art getting screwed.

no, the valve cover in question is already polished,, its by a new company... but basically charging labor....

as for the parts... the reason why parts are always this expensive for these cars, especially performance, is because alot of people want parts, they want cams, headers, rocker arms, etc.... and a while back companies would produce... but of course you know how supply and demand works....

most people will spend 200-300$ on an intake, but complain about a 200$ cam....

so none of the performance parts were really bought... so now here it is 5 years from when i started and i remember places like DM motorsports, GRD, etc... there was competition between places.... now with only rsm/rksport/mantapart/howellautomotive,,,,, such few companies, for the ones brave enough to produce what only a few will buy, there is less REAL demand for the supply.... everyone wants stuff when people say i will produce this and that, but when its time to buy, only a 1/10th will really even purchase it....

leaving the manufactuer to jack the price to pay for getting the parts made so they can try to break even...

like say if there was a cam made and 100 people said they wanted it, and then 400 people bought it, cams would be as low in price like for other cars.... but here 100 people will say they want it, and only 10 will buy it....

this is atleast once you get into more inner engine stuff...

sucks dont it
When you remove the valve cover, can you just pull it off, or does the engine need to be drained or something? What I mean is, can I just unscrew it, paint it, put it back on, start it up and go?
I'm just getting mine powdercoated! And how much heat can a powdercoat job stand? How much heat does the header produce beacuse I wanted to powdercoat it too (probably just ceramic coat it).

Adler I love your engine bay! Couple questions though, are the dyno #'s in your sig with all the work done in your registry (turbo, pistons, etc) or with just the turbo and accesories? And in your last vid I DL'ed I couldnt really hear the turbo spool+blow-off...Could you get a sound clip of it later on and e-mail it to me? thnx
The poweder coating on my valve is fine, the heat has not messed with the coating. I really doubt that powdercoating a header would last. It would probably be best to have your N/A header ceramic coated. You can send your header to Jet Hot, HPC, or any other place that does ceramic coating for you exhaust.

Most engine or hi temp paint has to cure so it can become chemically resistant.
