Doing a trans swap is a pain in the a$$
Especially on a front wheel drive car.
The trans and front axle are one piece
called a transaxle.
To do what you want to do
you basically have to swap out the whole front end
and do a good bit of modding to get the interior decent.
very bad idea
should have just bought a stick.

Wow, sorry, I was going to stay out of this thread due to it being asked every day, but that post above, no offense to the poster, is a load of bull@!#$.

The transmission and axle (actually axles) are not one piece, they are three, the transmission itself, the passenger axle, and the driver axle. Otherwise those of us who blow axles would be super pissed when we had to replace the transmission as well.

And the whole front end does not need to be swapped out. Just the transmission, a new mount welded in, and the computer reflashed. Everything else is the same.

No interior work needs to be done. In fact the center consoles between a manual and auto are exactly the same except for a little insert that can change out to use it either in an auto or manual. The pedal bolts right in and the cables have a spot to run through the fire wall.

Please don't give advice like above unless you really know that for a fact, otherwise you are just perpetuating bad information.

I was just oversimplifying.
Obviously all three aren't "one" piece
But from what i've seen you can't just
swap out the trans and everything
match up exactly.
yes i just joined on monday
but that is because i just
found the site.
I didn't do a whole lot of searches
using the term j-body because you
say that and 9 out of 10 people don't
know you are talking about.
Even if they say they know about cars.

Your the ninth... and you my friend, don't know what your talking about. How do you mean three peices by saying one.... It like saying that the entire car is one peice, oh except for all the hundreds of smaller peices attached to it. All you have to do in the inside is hang the clutch, put the linkages in the center console, which all bolt in, and run the cables and such. You make it sound like theres two diffrent types of J-bodies, one for autos and one for manuals. The tranny will bolt on to the engine. You just have to add some stuff here and there which more or less bolt onto the vehicle and get a reflash.

Not hard at all. Not easy, but not hard.
From what I've heard, the welding and hanging the clutch petal are the two PITA parts of the process. Many have done it.

Sorry Shifted, I know I completely just rehashed what you said.

As for who to trust, Shifted knows his stuff. Trust him.

I'm sorry i didn't mean for it to sound like such bull$&!t
it was just meant as a VERY broad statement to give him
an idea of what he would be messing with.
I have nothing to back up why that statement didn't sound
like bull. SORRY
I don't know what i was thinking with that one.
You guys are 100% right when it comes to what actually has to be done.

broad statements suck...... trans swaps aren't a big pain in the ass they are just time consuming

Hey I've been looking for this.

Shifted, You say that the clutch pedal will bolt directly in? Meaning no cutting has to be done? and Where would I get the insert for the console? Would a chevy dealer carry that part or can I grab it on line?
