What's your idle speed/shift rpms?

My car didn't come with a tach, and even though it's an automatic I put one in. I've got a tach adapter to convert it to a four-cylinder pulse, but I'm still not sure whether it's working properly. It idles at between 500 and 600rpm. What does everyone else idle at?

Also, where should my WOT shift points be? Out of first I hit the rev limiter at full throttle so I think my TV cable needs adjusting - my Chilton's manual explains how but has no pictures so if anyone has pics that would be appreciated.

1998 2200 with three-speed auto (3T40), idles at 500-600, where should it idle and where should the WOT shifts be?

my 99 z-24 idles at 900, same with my 03 LS SPort. Both are stick shifts.

my idle in my 02 ecotec is like low 500 it is a hair above the 500 line so that sounds right

Everything sounds right to me. My 98Z idles at just above 500 and at WOT it shifts at the limit, which is around I believe 6200.

Hi, thanks to all who responded. Quick question to ZSleeper, occasionally when I really floor my car the trans doesn't shift out of first gear and hits the rev limiter... my tach connections are a bit loose so at high rpms i can't keep track of where the engine is actually revving, but still.... what could be my problem there?

First, you might want to get all your connections tight. As far as shifting at the limit in first gear, that is where mine shifts since I am at WOT. From what I have heard, it's not a good thing to let it shift at the limit all the time. I usually only let it do it when I am at low speeds and not to often; usually when someone in front of me is doing 25mph in a 45 zone and I have plenty of room to pass them.
I don't think you have anything wrong, but you might want to insure that your connections are tight. I do believe our rev limit is at 6200, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Do they make the manuals idle higher so it's easier to get moving?

600 on a 3-speed sounds about right.

idles @ 900 when warm., and 1400rpm when it is cold.. I am guessing it does this to warm up.

I tightened up my connections and it idles between 500 and 700 rpm, the highest I've gotten it to shift is about 5700 which is fine I think, especially if redline on the 2200 is 6200.

Zsleeper is right about running the 2nd gen 2.2's too hard, they have a tendency to blow head gaskets. The old 2.2 does not have the guts to handle anywhere near as much abuse as the new 2.2 ecotech's, if you want it to last, do not be too rough with it!
Even the race proven 2.2 Ecotech's break once in awhile.
Our cars are like Fine Ladies, they look good and will stick by you. All you have to do is take care of them and be nice to them.
Treat them well and they will perform for you.
