there should be 4-5 wires

red - power tap into wiper fuse or any other power wire
black - ground , ground to bare metal
orange - illumination, tap into headlight fuse or headlight wire
green - tach signal, you can get it from coils or throttle wire which if i remember correctly should be white

Ummmm, doesn't your car already have a tach?

He needs a big ass 7" tach so he doesn't miss his shifts dude!

You could also get a cluster with a tach for a 1996 at the salvage yard or pick-n-pull. Easy swap. It is plug and play.

no it doesn't have one I could just get a cluster and have one will it hook up even though my car don't have one and would it matter if it was a auto or manual trans car

cluster is much more difficult to replace imo since you'd have to tear your dash out completely
where as for aftermarket tach you only have 4-5 wires to connect

holy crap you have to pull it all apart? that's a bad design

No you don't... there are 11 screws to pull the upper dash off and three more to pull the cluster and radio bezel. Then it's just two bolts and two electrical plugs to remove the cluster.

If you consider that too difficult you should find a different hobby.

Also, you'll want to get an Automatic cluster if you have an auto, and a manual cluster if you have a manual, to keep functionality of the gear selector.

yep, z24's and I think rally-sport models did too. It was an option, so could be found on any 1996 cavalier. Cluster is really easy to get to and swap.

I just did a cluster swap on my 01 cavalier, I got one with a tach cluster out of a 00. Never had an issue with the anti-theft system. It was plug and play.

My 98 needed a passlock relearn, it depends on the car.
