If you have a DVOM with Conductivity Pickup with it you can monitor all of these steps. you should have less than .2 of a voltage drop between the alternator and the battery. any more than that you have corrosion or loose connections. The closer to zero you get the nicer it is.... Good sticky though the average enthusiasts should know all this by heart.

another question....

how do you cut 0/1 gauge wire?

Tin snips make it an easy job.

i just did my big 3 upgrade tonight. I swear it was the best upgrade for my audio system to date. Even my headlights are running brighter and i swear my car actually runs a little bit smoother with the extra grounds. I did mine in 4 gauge to match my power wire and i got a great deal on a stinger 150a circuit breaker ($22.95 from local shop) for the link between the battery and alt.

Thanks for the write up! its really worth doing.

Would I be ok to run a circuit breaker over a fuse? I think within the long run it would be cheeper and easier to do.

If Im using 0/1 gauge wire for my amp, do I need 0/1 gauge wires for the big 3? Seems like 4 gauges would probably be sufficient. Am I wrong? Thanks!

4 gauge will be fine, since you're running short distances.
