New motor in & running,Few ???
Wednesday, April 13, 2005 8:59 AM
Finally got time to get the motor and trans. changed out. Got it fired up this morning first shot. Idles great sounds good. Here's the list. (2.4 in case you don't know)

.020 over bore Wiseco forged 9:1comp.
Eagle rods
Clevite bearings
Balance shafts removed 2.3 oil pump conversion
Full port and polish on the head new Stainless intake and exhaust valves
2.3 cam (secret cams) swap
Full balance on rotating assembly and Alum. Flywheel
Still running the S/C with a 62mm throttle body
RC 320 injectors
Cartech FMU
SAFC
ARP Head and Main Studs

Swapped Third and Fourth gears from a 2.2 trans. into the 2.4 Isuzu 5 spd.
Quaife LSD
Spec stage 3 clutch
Stage 2 axles

Now for the questions...

1. At idle the EGT's are up from the stock motor 950 or so on the stocker 1100 on the new motor. On my A/F gauge it seems to be running lean because unless I blip the throttle it will not show a green indicator light , it stays all yellows to all reds... (I know it's not the best way to tell but it's what I've got for now... BTW I backed the SAFC Lo settings to ZERO I was taking out a little (-5 on the stocker. I do realize the new motor is going to flow more air even at idle BUT shouldn't the ECU still be able to keep up on the fuel??? Any ideas why???

2. Also the cooling fan won't come on now. It ran all the time before (anytime the motor was running the fan was running. I had replaced the Sensor and the relay but it still wouldn't shut off) Any ideas why???

Haven't got it out on the road yet. i still have to get all the sheet metal back on and go get the front end aligned. But should be back on the road by the weekend...

Ok, #1, I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but at idle, your computer trys to hit 14.7:1 a/f. I believe green starts a little under 13:1 (not 100% sure though), so if your seeing a steady green at idle, your idling too rich.

#2, only thing I can say here is make sure you plugged the fan back in. Other wise, if you turn on your AC, your fan should run constant, turn that on and you can check plugs and wires to see where the power loss, or bad fan motor is.

Good luck.

Nice setup.

One thing I can think of on the EGT's, the RC injectors have HUGE holes in them for the fuel to spray out of...... its possibly the fuel isnt atomizing enough going into the cylinder, and there for not burning completly...... untill it reaches the exhaust manifold. That could be causing the high EGT's. To check, just swap in the stockers (to check the idle, or light throttle) See if your EGT's go back to normal. (not sure if these injectors where in before the engine rebuild).......... usually the LOWER compression will lower the EGT's...... (less heat created in the combustion chamber) but maybe thats also causing the fuel not to burn entierly in the cylinder, and its continuing to burn out into the exhaust manifold. EGT gauges are way to hard to read w/o a Wide Band to compair it against....... I would get a Wide Band setup, and go from there.

As for the cooling fan...... is it plugged in? Just make sure to check the grounds..... the main ones on the front of the block. Make sure the relay is in place. Make sure the temp sensor is plugged in (water neck on head) Also, turn the A/C on... the fan SHOULD kick on.

My advice is to drive it around, the ecu takes time to learn.

When we first strated my current motor it ran like complete @!#$, with 320cc RC injectors the a/f was all over the place ranging from 9:1 to 20:1, lol. It took some driving around( a couple hundred miles) keeping a very close eye on all my gauges before the ecu learned how it wanted to work together with the new motor work.

Thanks for the help guys... I just finished doing the fan override switch so at least I can turn the fan on. I'll finish getting it all put back together tomorrow and give it test drive to see how it runs... Pretty pumped right now

Lower compression pistons will result in higher EGT's. This could be a factor in the higher temps.

After changing so much of the engine, I wouldn't worry about what the engine used to run, as long as the engine is ok now and within specs. Thats whats important right? Just the placement of the probe could affect the temps you're reading... so don't stress out about it. Good luck.

I may be wrong about this, but I don't think they ever made them for J-bodies...

the quaiffe LSD is a retrofit that bolts on (I believe) from another car that has a similar transmission

If you have a getrag you can buy a Quaife LSD straight from GM.

Nope, Quaife at one time made one for both trans's found in the 3rd Gen. J-bodies. (just so happens the trans's were found in other cars as well.)
