looking at some transmissions for my car and I noticed some low mileage ones on eBay. I see that 99-01 transmissions look to have a direct interchange, but most 2002 ones only list that year as compatible. What are the differences between years of 4t40E transmissions for a 2200 engine? How much work does it take to make one interchange with the other? If I get a used transmission I would prefer to keep it as low mileage and as new as possible. I have a 2000 cavalier by the way.

A 2.2 Eco transmission from a 2002 to 2005 will not interchange to any other engine
A 2.3/2.4 transmission from a 1995 to 2002 will not interchange with any other engine
A 2200/2.2 transmission from a 1995 to 2002 will not interchange with any other engine

OK, I understand that part. Different engines == no good. It's nomenclature or years that certain options were offered that I am double checking. In the auctions listed above they are both from a 2.2 engine which as long as the 2.2 does not refer to an Eco engine 2.2 == 2200. Correct me if I am wrong. However both of those auctions were for engines after 2002. Does that mean they are 2.2 Eco transmissions?
I did a quick search on ecotec model years, which I should have done already and found;

So that answers that question. I guess I was mislead when you said;

I took that to mean that there was a non eco 2200 2005 cavalier offered. Which I now see is not the case.
SO, I can safely assume that with a 2002 and older transmission when it says from a 2.2 engine this is a non eco and will interchange with mine. Anything from 2003 might, might not. Anything newer will not. Unless for some reason these cars did not have their stock engine/transmission.
If I want a 2005 transmission I would have to do the Ecotec engine swap which for a 2000 cavalier would be a lot less work than a 99 or older. But still way out of my league. Yup so thats where I stand.
I get it now. I apologize for my lack of motivation for searching, it would have made this make sense a lot earlier and I would not have asked so many silly questions. Before I close this thread please confirm I have not come to the wrong understanding.

A 2200 engine will not interchange with the eco, ONLY ECO TRANSMISSIONS INTERCHANGE WITH ECO's. Eco is not a 2200 or even close to the pre-02 2.2's.
The only difference between 4T40E's from 95-2005 is the bellhousing, the guts are the same. Its easier to just get the transmission you need instead of trying to change the bellhousing.

I've got a question and thought this thread was appropiate, even though it's an old one.
Daughter owns a 2002 Sunfire (VIN-4) and wrecked the transmission (4T40-E). The code tag shows 2WK (2002 and usage). Will a 0WK (2000 and usage) be a direct fit? Or, would the transmission from say, a '02 Saturn (2PC) be better? In other words, do you want to match the year or the two character code or get lucky and find all matching for a direct fit?
Go to a wrecking yard and they can tell you exactly which trannys will be a direct interchange.
