with the middle number going from 55 to 50 does that make the sidewall height shorter?

Tire sizes 101:

The first number is the section width
The second number is the aspect ratio (ratio of sidewall height to section width)
The third number is the rim diameter

To find out the width of the tire in inches, take the first number and divide by 25.4
To get the sidewall height, multiply that by the aspect ratio as a decimal
To get the overall height of the tire on the rim, multiply the sidewall height by 2, and add the rim diameter

Ex: factory size 205/55/16;
205/25.4=8.07"
8.07x.55=4.44"
4.44*2=8.88"
8.88+16=24.88" overall tire height

Other sizes in this thread:
215/55/16=25.31"
225/50/16=24.85"

Make sense?

kind of makes sense. so the next size wider that wouldnt look to small would be 225 50 16

Technically, the 215/55 would be OK, particularly if you weren't lowered, but it's going to be a taller tire than you have now. This will throw off your speedometer. It will also make your rims look smaller. If you don't mind either of these problems, then it's not a big issue, but the 225/50 would give you more tread without the increase in height. The point is that you generally want to keep your overall height the same, or as close as possible.
