205/40/17

I just have a question and couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.
When I went to a custom shop in my city I was told when shopping for rims and tires what to buy.
He told me that since the stock size is 205/55/16, when I got 17's the "55" would go down 5 to "50" and if I got 18's I would get "45" instead of "50" and so on (really bad with wording it, sorry"
But there is someone selling 17" rims with 205/40/17 which I know is to small, so I thought I would need 205/50/17.
But I read a couple posts on here where people are saying 215/45/17 would be closer to the actual stock size.
So, should I get 205/45/17 or 215/45/17, or should I get 205/50/17 or 215/50/17
I'm confused about whether I should get wider tires or not and if 45 or 50 would be better.. Thanks

I run a 205/50/17 and the speedometer is only like 2 mph off at 70.

I used to have 17's and I was running 215/45/17 tires on them and I liked the look. Basically its all about preference and what tire size will fit without hitting your struts.

Well I was reading that if you have the wrong size tire your odometer will put more kilometers on then what you've actually driven.. And the spedo part I found out about. I have 205/60/16 on now and my spedo says 100 when I'm actually going 105.

Another question, I bought the rims and 2 have realllly bad curb rash. Anyone know an easy fix?
