Interest in CF HVAC plate?

Hi guys,

I have had a few inquiries regarding doing a carbon fiber HVAC panel.

I am happy to make these for you but want to know if its going to be a problem for anyone that they WILL lose all of the lights associated with this part of the car.

There's no way to work around it. These will be painted black on the rear to keep any light from coming through. I would do this to my own ride, but I am kind of into my lights at night.

Anyway, just wanted to know what the general feeling was toward this project before going any further.

Ben said he didnt like to mess with 'em or I would have stayed out. The method I use is probably better suited for this.

Don't worry Ben - you have my guarantee that I will NEVER attempt to do the 3D stuff you do!

Will grab some of your door panels this summer.

PS - First person to email me with a free HVAC plate to use as a template gets a FREE carbon fiber version! Better hurry!

Steve: I posted this zip a while back. Search. hehe

There is an HVAC face in there you can use as a template.

Dave - have not even begun yet, my friend! But keep an eye out!

Raptor - thanks once again for your wealth of knowledge! Let me know if you want the free one when they are done. Even if you don't want it for your own car, you can always trade it or something. This file of yours includes all Cavs and Fires?

Hey Titus,

Yeah "that guy" is pretty fast on the draw!

The last thing I want to do is create an atmosphere of competition or bad feelings. I am certain that there are enough J-Bodies for everyone to make mods for, though.

At least with a couple of us doing it, the products will be available most of the time.

Like when I am in production, you'll have them on eBay, etc.

Hope that we will remain friends! I have no plans to do the fuse box cover or airbag covers that you do, and the HVAC is still just a thought.

Sure, I'll take it.

I must say I'm unsure as to whether or not there are differences in cavs/fires over different model years. I only have one J to look at, heh.

After looking at a few photos online, all the HVACs appear to be identical - that is, three main knobs to the left, and the optional buttons to the right. That's right - optional. A/C and rear defrost aren't standard, so keep that in mind when you create these.

Bear in mind I do not have any sort of measurements - it's just from eyeballing pictures. For all I know, the centers of each knob are slightly different. After some quick looking at eBay I'd venture out on a limb and say 95-02 Cav/Fire HVACs are identical. For the 03-05 however, I'd get a sample HVAC to ensure proper fitment, or you could just say buyer beware on the first one and then offer to replace at no cost (since I know your customer service is great) if it doesn't fit correctly.

If they are indeed different, I'd love a scan of the 03-05 face. I'm trying to add all possible gauges and HVACs, in addition to dimmer switch panels to that template zip.

the 03+ HVACs have changed slightly from the 95-02 on the cav not sure about the fires(i think they are the same though).
the off is built into the fan speed instead of the position selector on the 03+ cavs
steve, when do i get my dimmer switch i want to put it in!!!!!

^ that kind of difference won't matter, since no light comes through anyway.

I'm more worried about positional differences. If the centers of the holes for the knobs have changed, then there will be some massive problems.

I will have the answers to this tomorrow when I cut a vinyl test copy to stick over mine to see if it fits.

I have solved the issue of the lights.

Mine will be a specially-designed "daytime" cf HVAC cover. I plan to add some thickness to it using the same material that goes with my cf bumper emblem. I will get precise measurements so that the face will just barely squeeze into position and be able to be quickly popped back out.

You will be able to place the cf face into the HVAC area during the day and remove it at night if you choose, without having to remove the dash front.

I will also print white or silver logos on clear vinyl to apply to these once I get the template and switch positions for all years.

Steve, I finally got my new computer today!! I am also interested in the HVAC panel. And it doesn't matter to me that you can't see the lights through it. Heck, as many times as I adjust the temps, I've got the controls memorized. Did you save me the dimmer switch and door panels? I will try your website again if you want me to.

crazycavgirl,

Yep, you are all set. I will send an update email in the next couple of days.

Phase One of the daytime HVAC panel has been successful. I have a working template (have not compared it to Raptor's yet to see if they match) and I plan to create the pattern for the HVAC hole in the front dash. Once I have a tight enough fit, I will finish the design.

If I can't get the fit I'm looking for, I probably will not make these.

But I usually obsess about things enough until I finally get it right!
