quarterloafed...I love that word

the only reason i left out 96 and 99 is cuz they are goofy years but SHOULD be supported either way, since there are a bunch of you guys waiting too..

Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..

I'm concentrating on the 97, 99, and 2000 2.4's right now, and as soon as I get a couple 2.2 BIN's I'll get into those

Seriously, so far, the only difference in the 97 and 99 ECU's is the locations of the information, so I don't see it being a problem.

96 was such a bastard year for the PCM I'll look at it, but I think it was more OBD-1 than OBD-2

Rodimus Prime wrote:someone else will jump on the boat and they wont, i wont feel a bit sorry for them, i think why there is so much going on right now is that we are in the middle of a revolution right now. The V8s of the mostly older crowd do thier thing and most of us within the younger segment do our thing with the 4 bangers. Theres a number of differences which seperate us. They like rear drive we grow up in an era where few cars are v8 and hardly any are rear drive. We are used to better gas mileage and focus more on suspensions. We are accepting to technology while the old timers swear by thier carbs. v8s dont rule or roam the streets anymore, they havent for years. In 1985 I wouldnt believe that a cavalier could beat a camaro. Now in 2005 the cobalt ss can beat alot of them. The V8 guys are in denial I think and they still think that its inconceivable to get beat by a 4 banger.

I know this alot because of the conversations that I have with my dad. For instance a 1967 Shelby GT 500 runs 14.0 in the 1/4 mile many of us on here have beaten that . He just swears that no 4 cylinder can beat a V8. He thinks its silly for me to mod my car. Fact of the matter is that when I'm done my car will roast anything he ever built. Young guys dont mod V8s cause its not what they grew up with, we cant afford the insurance on a v8 either

I don't believe this is true at all. I'm 22 and have been building engines since I was 15 I've owned chevelles, camaros, and novas and even with full coverage I never paid over 60 bucks a month compare that to the 200 I pay now for full coverage on my cavie plus I could run in the 12 for less then $2000 I don't think its a matter of money I think its a matter of how much time a person wants to spend making their rides right. plus the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's if kept in good shape never drop in value compare that to our cars which lose $3000 as soon as we drive them off the lot. at the same time I think it's incredible what can be done now as far as hp to displacement is concerned.

Awesome, throw me an email, I gotta send a couple ECU's up to Canadia soon to get them modified so I can work on them.

I have mentioned this in another thread.

For approximately $300 one can purchase Tunercat OBDII. This is a tuner/ cable package for reflashing OBDII PCM's. I've spoken with people who are using the software and people who were involved in development. It works.

A person with this software should be able to read/ write stock calibrations to the J car pcm. There is currently no definition file for any J's, but obtaining code is the first step to making one. If you only need to concentrate on building the definition file, rather than re-inventing the entire cable and reflash software package, you'll save bunches of time. And a working definition file can be resold without providing the support that would be needed for the complete tuning package. Making the def. file provides the fastest return on investment.

With respect to various pcm's in different cars, it makes the most sense to limit the pcm choices in order to provide the best support. If 96 is an oddball, then don't support it. Instead, find the solution to installing the 97 or 98 pcm in that vehicle. If calibration data is in different locations between various 97 and 98 2.4 pcm's, settle on one year to hack. The wiring pinouts are the same for at least those 2 years, so there's no difference in the code from the engine's perspective.

I've been involved in a few large projects similar to OBDProject. A few core people generally support the project, while others will work on it for a while then disappear. And through it all there are many people whe offer the promise of "maybe I can help someday" but never get to. Keep it small in order to make progress. One engine, one pcm, one calibration.

I'll take a closer look at the TunerCat software, but I'm pretty sure they are exclusive to the V8's. I believe that the 4 cylinder's have a different security algorithm than the V8's, which is why OBDProject is stuck again. I have a work around, but its a last resort type thing.

Yeah i have looked into the Tunercat saftware, and i believe it is just for the V8, but i do know that they have a flasher and definition file for the 96+ vortec 4.3L V6 trucks, a freind locally has been looking into buying it, i would hate to buy it and it not work.

Hey Shifted, do you know if the 4.3L V6 would have the saem security as the V8, or would it be more like the 4 banger, maybe the V6 tuner could be made to work with the J-body PCM???

I'm not sure if the 6 cylinder shares the same security algorithm as the 4 cylinders or the 8 cylinders, or even if it has its own algorithm. I'm really not even sure at this point if all the engines, regardless of cylinders, have the same algorithm. I haven't been able to test the V8 algorithm on anything, but I know that one generates valid keys for at least the V8's.

Even if the security is the same, the maps are probably in different locations, and a V6 tuner would be lost when it started looking at the 4 cylinders. It would try to flash it back to the PCM in a V6 style map layout (and probably succeed in doing so), but the car wouldn't run.

I posted this on the HP web site, but I'll add it here....

The ECM's to support are the 99, 00-02 2.4, 02-05 Ecotec....

The 96's can hard wire in a 99 ECM (I have the wire setup already mapped out)
The 97 and 98's can swap in 99 ECM's no problem. (We've already proved that)

Sorry 2.2 ohv guys.....
