Carbon fiber question?
Thursday, February 17, 2005 11:10 AM
I've searched for this and couldn't find what I was looking for. So,... this is for anyone who has actually done some carbon work. I want to do some exterior and interior parts but I don't know how to lay it or how you get it so smooth. I've done a fair amount of fiberglass work, so I understand how that kinda works. Also, for anyone who's done a sunfire dash, after you pull of the vinyl top thingy all over, how thick is it. When you pull it off how much do you have to build it up to make it look right. So I really need a good step by step on laying carbon. Pics would be awesome. Thanks J-body guys!!

If your just wrapping a part then its as simple as it sounds, you just have to wrap it, tuck it behind the edges and get it to stay there, with glue, spray adhesive or whatever you come up with. make sure its wrapped real tight then lay down some epoxy. get it thick enough to withstand some sanding because unless you have the ability to vaccum bag, wetsanding is the only way to get it smooth. Bottom line though, practice practice practice, specially if your going to be doing a peice thats highly visible. Good luck ! Post pics of your work too.

It took about 5 hours to get everything just right, (cutting the carbon, laying it, then applying the epoxy) Then 12 hours to dry , and between 4-6 hours worth of wet sanding and another layer of clear coat , and of course some more wet sanding so all together around 2 days on and off. And despite what anyone says about pricing, its not really that expensive. I have enough fiber right now sitting next to me to do both door panels and the headliner, and I payed $66 . Add in the epoxy for $28, and $94 is your price. I have a new camera too, so when I get a minute I'll take some new pictures.

carbcom.com You can get it in different widths, and its sold by the linear yard. So 1 yard by 60" is what I get, or longer (2 yards) or 3 ....... you get the picture.

all i know is its super time consuming. my boyfriend does pieces. laying it is hard enough because the material itself easily will frey if you pull too hard...and once the epoxy is laid and drys out its sanding sanding sading until its completely smooth. just be careful to not go too deep and sand right through to the materia,\l.

here is a link to what he did to my friend marks altima. the door panels were awesome. the entire interior was fiberglassed and done in silver carbon fiber

good luck!

When I originally did my dash I used table top klear koat from uscomposites.com , but because they took forever to ship to me because of my APO address I now use a local German brand.
