3800 S/C

Hey guys, I need a little advice.

A S/C off of a 01 GTP has recently fallen into my lap. I'm wondering how feasible putting it on a j with stock internals would be. I've heard many rumors about how much boost these S/C's put out, but they're just rumors and I can't seem to find a definite answer. I'm looking to run 4-6 LBS, just making the car a little more fun to drive I'm looking to stay on the cheap side here, I'm saving for the new truck too So if anyone has advice, or knows what kindof work I'm going to need to put into this, let me know!

Thanks!

There's a thin line to be crossed, when the upgrades to your vehicle increase your chance to get tickets by an amount exponential enough to stop worrying and build the fastest, loudest car you can.

This project will not be cheap and that supercharger with the size pulley they come with on the gtp will be more than 10 psi on a 2.4 engine. It is obvious just by your question that you are not at this time capable of pulling this off. You would be getting in far over your head with a project like this. I would reccomend you just scrap this idea.

heres what i found to be true with a 086 head and an M90

GM made a version of the M90 which is the one you have. It has a 3.2 " Snout pulley. Ford also makes a M90, which is what i have . That one has a smaller 3.0" snout pulley. so....

HO crank pulley 5.51" + 3.0" SC pulley = 6 PSI
LD9 Crank pulley 6.45" + 3.0" SC pulley = 13.75 PSI

So, with that I would suspect that using the GM M90 with 3.2" pulley, you should see these results...

HO Crank Pulley + 3.2 SC Pulley = 4-5 PSI
LD9 Crank Pulley = 3.2 SC pulley = 10-11 PSI

and here are some pics of me trying to test fit the GM M90 into my engine bay... notice its quite large. lol the ford version is a much smaller package with the same rotor pack, so thats what i would recomend.

Here is the two blowers for those who dont know. First is the Ford M90, second is the GM M90

The differance is the GM unit is much longer than the Ford. This is becuase the GM has a longer snout lenth, and also has an integrated bypass valve. The longer lenth of the GM unit, and its funny footprint (wider than the ford) make it more difficult to put into these engine bays, IMHO.. however, it has been done. check out user name 1997z24 .

The Ford unit is smaller, and has much more convienient mounting points, and flanges to work with. It has a shorter snout lenth, and no internal bypass valve. This makes it a much smaller package with the same airflow abilities. you will have to use an external bypass valve with this unit. For mine, i used a DSM Blowoff valve, and removed the spring from inside of it. Now it stays open when in vacumm, but closes as soon as you cross over into boost. The boost pressure then holds the valve shut, creating a good seal.

Here is the Ford M90 in the same position, notice how much smaller it is.

setting on the custom intake manifold i made with bypass valve...

I highly recommend you do not make a manifold like this. Remote mount the charger and use the factory intake manifold, it flows much much better and allows you to use a FMIC. With the manifold in the picture, i was only able to use meth/water mix as an intercooling method.

but in the end... remote mount is the only way to go...

thats crazy remote mounting that, but looks pretty cool. i would assume if you can fabricate your own manifolds and stuff you can pretty much do anything, nice work

yup, running remote now. I finished the car in november, and have been driving it everyday to work since to get a nice break in period and to hash out any little items that need fixing. So far, all is good, this is completely reliable street car, well mannered, quite, and explosively fast when needed. highly recommended.
strips open back up in march, so i'll get numbers then to prove my results with numbers rather than opinion.
