Supercharging 98' LD9

Hey guys.

My friend is looking into the GM supercharger kit for his LD9, and it looks like a pretty good option. Im helping him put this all together as I turboed and tuning my own honda (different world obviously). The only question I have is tuning. I see it mostly comes down to HPtuners or an FMU. In the honda world, FMU's are severely looked down upon because its not a proper way to tune a car, and is definatly not the safest way. I understand that these are much different platforms and probably behave differently, so thats why Im asking.

If we get an FMU, what kind of ratio should we be looking for? What are the stock injector sizes? I see the cartech/BEGI 2025 is used alot. Does this adjust idle fuel pressure and boost fuel?

Now with HPtuners, is that all he needs to tune? Does the base package have live updates (IE not burning/flashing chips). If we get that, I'll be street tuning it.

Thanks

I am not going to be able to answer many of your questions but I will take a stab at a few of them.

HP Tuners is a reflash so no burning chips. Only takes about 4minutes to actually flash the pcm. You would have to do a fake 2 bar tune if you use HP tuners.

Stock injector size is 252cc or right around there. The supercharger kit should come with some 310cc injectors unless someone used different ones and a custom tune.

i had a supercharger on my 98 Z in the end i ended up using an e-manage ultimate with pressure sensor and tuned it myself threw aid of a wideband controller. at first i was running a FMU accompanied by a adjustable FPR and a pressure gauge tapped into the fuel rail... it definitely wasn't the way to go, that's why i switched to the e-manage.

back when i had the car there wasn't anything such as HP tuners so im not sure about that option.

if your gonna go threw all that work you might as well turbo the dang thing... that's just some foresight for ya.
good luck man boosting a 98 isn't for the faint of heart or unknowledgeable that's for sure.

HPTUNERS is a better option than an FMU... it'll never have a proper fuel curve plus you cannot pull timing properly.

Fake 2 bar is an option if you can get your hands on a working file...

HPT is definitely the best option. You will have to use some other type of injectors as the 310's that come with the kit are high impedence and pre 00 are low; some ford browntops or something would work fine.

HPT is the better option. Maybe even HPT with a FMU. If you are going to use a FMU only then use a adjustable one.

Also if doing the charger you need a 99+ starter.

You need a lot for a pre 99 lol.

As mentioned the newer style starter. Also removing the EGR and getting a block off plate. And again, the injectors with the kit wont work. Brown tops are good, but Im using the L67 injectors. (3800 supercharged) And hope you know HPT cuz I still cant figure my car out. Still commanding 10.00 afr at 4000+rpm at WOT.

But yes, you will want to do a fake 2bar with HPTuners and make sure you have a wideband 02 sensor.

try doing it on a 96 z24

when i was s/c'd all i did was upgrade the intank pump to a crappy walbro(fuel cut under 1/2 tank). ran a cartech FMU and the rest was stock. (stock injectors, stock FPR).

EGR= CLEARED the code each time i started the car ( 96ecu= no HP tuners)

i ran water/meth injection (m4 injector).

stock s/c pulley. and every bolt on you could do really.

lasted for 2 years, never dynoed it, or ran it at the track. Got decent gas mileage too. ran strong.

as far as adjusting the base fuel pressure with the FMU, that is done with the bigger screw in the middle, and the boost/fuel ratio is adjust by a little knob on the side.

Having not done it (yet?) but from what I've read and heard, it doesn't sound that bad (others seem to have kinda confirmed that too, even in this thread). Swap for the newer starter, different injectors, then probably a FMU with HPT. At least we've got the capability to use HPT - and we have a kit that, once you change out the starter, is a bolt on kit still. Biggest issue is getting a good solid tune, at least that's my understanding.

Good luck on that "solid" tune. I thought I had one, then it became intermittent. Waiting on HPTuners to reply back with a solution.
