2200 valve guides
Saturday, August 07, 2010 3:36 PM
So I am in the process of building the motor and I was wondering if anyone makes bronze valve guides for the 2200 or if I just need to get the measurements and order them that way. The stock stem size is fine. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Mantapart had them I believe (think I have a set in the garage for the 97- heads); but no, nobody makes them anymore that I know of.

why are you looking into getting these?
I would not get custom ones unless you plan on having a very percise way of measuring.
These need to be pressed in, there for once done, the ID will shrink.
Also due to thermal expansion and contraction, the ID will change once in the head.
All of this needs to be taken into consideration to have the valve line up correctly in the guide.
I used stock guides and had them custom machined to fit 5/16 stems, and teflon race seals.
But my head work is very far from stock and took over 6 months to get it all spec'd out.

Just stay with stock ones.

Phil raised some good points.
Vinny, if you want to have some brass made, I can get you the proper ID and OD. Just have to find them...

JBP has bronze valve guides

Here is the link for the LN2's

Pretty sure the guides are different for 97- and 98+. But, as usual, JBP doesn't specify

Thats true they dont specifiy which engine they are for. I didn't look into it, just knew I saw them there the other day.

Well the reason I wanted to look into some was because when checking the springs and everything, i noticed that there was some "play" on the valve when it was in the guide. Im rebuilding the motor, and did want to use something that was questionable. I knew they were pressed in also. Im not sure if this "play" is necessary but I know usually it is not. The head im using, had around 140,000 miles on it, but im redoing everything so i figured it would just be good to install some bronze ones.

Don't you have the tools to knurl the guide? That's what alot of shops do, when it's a rush-job or the guides can't be had so-easily.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

I just wanted to replace them cause everything on the motor will be new. I can knurl the guides but i feel thats the 'quick fix." I will check how bad they are, but i would rather install a bronze guide liner instead of knurling them. This is why i was just going to buy bronze guides or replace them with stock ones.
