how do you get these clamps off i cant figure it out for the life of me. im talking about the boot that is right nect to the steering column. thats connected to the tie rod. i dont know but is that the inner tie rod cause i need to replace it or the boot(the boots torn). i dont know if the whole thing needs to be replaced or not. but i bent my tie rod when i curbed my tire. the tie rod end boot is leaking and the rod that its connected to is bent also. so im not sure what all needs to be replaced?
also my axle came out of the tranny on the left side because i messed up my subframe. it looks as if it just came out and all i need is the clamp to hold it back on. what kind of grease should i use and how much. i have a grease gun that i use to grase all my fittings on the car. well i know i need a new subframe and control arm also.
any help is reallly appreciated,
Nick
You can try ganking a boot off a yard rack & pinion... But I'll bet the r&p is ruined, and needs to be replaced.
The axle is probably ruined, they don't take longidutinal forces very well. And being ripped out of the tranny is one of those forces. White lithium grease will work for just about anything in a car engine. Just don't use it on brakes, or anything in the cooling system.
Have an auto tranny? If so, your final drive (differiential) is probalby missing a few teeth, and will need repairs.
Momma always said "If you're gonna do it, do it right". You f***ed your car up right.
So how will i know if my rack and pinion is messed up?
How will i know if my axle is messed up also?
Yes i do have a 3 speed auto. if the teeth are messed up what will happen. also does that mean i will have to have my tranny worked on? if so thats really gonna suck cause i dont ahve much money right know and it really sucks having a full time job and school with no car.
thanks
also does tranny fluid run through the rack and pinion?
It's power steering fluid in the r&p, if it's coming out, there's a good chance it's fubar. Don't put tranny fluid in the power steering system; PS fluid is glycol based like brake fluid, tranny fluid is hydrocarbon based like oil.
Take apart whatever you can on it, look it over closely. If all looks good leave it alone, you can always replace it later if you have to, and the procedure isn't too bad.
The axle you'll have to take apart. I think there's directions around here somewhere. I'll post again later if I find them, or I'll write them up.
If the final drive is fubar, when you put the car in gear, then start to roll, you'll suddenly jump/skip a gear, jerk forward/backward, and then it will seem normal for a while.
