Hey dudes, so listen, i've got the Amplified Audio system or whatever stock and its got amplified rear speakers and "upgraded" front speakers. Needless to say the "upgraded" fronts sounded like death so I ripped those bad-boys out and tossed some Pioneers in: huuuge improvement. Now I'm looking to do the same with the rear speakers.
I've done my research on this topic, I know my rear speakers have 4 wires, are "dual voice-coiled" and run off the factory amp. What I'm looking for is a pair of speakers that will connect to the amplifier the exact same way the stockers did. That is, using all 4 wires. I'm not looking for block-rockin' sound here, just want those ugly stockers out back replaced to match the clarity the new Pioneer front speakers are sending my way.
Thanks in advance, you guys are solid.
Have you actually looked at your rear speaker connections yet? You should have only 2 wires going to each speaker from the amp, even if the speakers are dual voice coil. Ive never heard of aftermarket speakers ever using the same connectors at the stock ones do. Get some adapters or just wire everything together yourself. I've also never seen dual voice coil 6x9's, but some one might make them, probably not pioneer. Something doesn't sound right, I've completely wired stereo systems from scratch and haven't seen what your talking about. I do know if you replace your deck with aftermarket, you need to bypass the stock amp (wich I didn't think any of cars had). At least I havn't seen one yet.
im pretty sure you can use the fctory amp to power the new speakers. ive seen threads on this before, but not having a factory amp myself i never payed much attantion to them. have you tried searching the forum yet? if not im sure some one who knows more will post up eventually.

im with whitegoose on this one, just take an ohm reading of the factory speakers to make sure the are 4 ohm, some factory premuim systems run at two ohms so if something blows you have to go back to them, never seen it in a cav or a sunfire but there is a first for everything.
im pretty sure the rear speakers from the monsoons are around 8 or 6 ohm... i know 6 ohm seems really akward, but i think i remember seeing that some where in a grand am with the rear speakers i think... i dunno for sure.

Hey guys, so I've got the rear carpeting off the Z24 and I'm looking at the 2 horrible stock speakers and I really wanna rip em out and stick 2 new ones in. But their wired really wierd and I still have no clue what to do with them. Help?
o snap this dawg talkz like he straight from tha block.

who the hell are you talking about, and how was this necessary, go away.
if i remember correctly, i couldn't figure out how to wire my speakers either (02 z24 with premium sound). i ended up buying a new headunit and just redoing all the wiring. i recommend you do the same, you won't regret it. the factory deck sucks and the "premium sound package" is nothing compared to decent speakers and a decent head unit...even with no amp.
GO PATS!!!
When I replaced the speakers in my sunfire, I put in infinity kappa 3-ways.
It had the monsoon system, and everything execpt the speakers was all stock
The 4 wires on that system that went to each speaker in the deck were low and hi outputs. Just figure out which one is the low and high, and hook it to the pioneer the same way (im not sure if pioneer has a seperate connections for low and hi)
On a set of infinity reference speakers i had to frankenstein them (unsolder the tweeter from the mid, and hook them up seperately).
This for me sounded ok for a long time untill the monsoon am started overheating and i got rid of it. With a new Alpine deck and some bigger wires and nice crossovers, Im much happier.
good luck!
wooow, why does GM have to make my life so difficult?? So if I take my new speaker and wire it normally like Just Dave suggested that'll work? That really doesn't sound right.. are there any speakers on the market that have the same type of connections the stock "premium sound" speakers do? And whats this about making sure the new speakers have the same ohms as the old ones?
Check my sticky, it has the wire layout - use the low output on the rars and you'll be golden. There's no aftermarket speakers that have the stock connectors, and don't worry about ohms, unless you're running the infinity 2 ohm speakers. Any old 4 ohm speaker will do you justice.

Ok, so I read the sticky and it was very informative and all but I still have no clue whats going on here. The amps got me thrown for a loop.. the front speakers were so easy to swap out, why are these rear ones so complicated?
If you could do me a huge favour and explain this sentence; "use the low output on the rars and you'll be golden" as though you were speaking to a 3 year old that would be great. I'm clearly a novice at this so any detail you can provide is awesome.
You guys really are too good to me.
Seeing how you're obviously a novice - pull new speaker wires and be done with it already!
Sure, I tell you, you tell someone else, next thing ya know we're in the middle of another ice age.
i would like to know the same, i dont want a new deck, the factory does everything i need anyway, plus the doorchime is in there and i need that but i read something a while ago about soldering 2 of the 4 wires to a different location on the speaker along with the 2 on the terminals.
Does anybody know for certain what the ohm rating of the rear speakers on the Premium Audio is?
lol ok, this is what you need to do. Hook two of the wires up to your new speakers. If it sounds funny and just a bunch of highs comming out you got the wrong set, hook the others up. should sound right now.
so step by step here
Step 1. Take out old stock speakers.
Step 2. Put in new after market speakers.
Step 3. Hook up a set of wires to them, don't matter which ones just pick one.
Step 4. Listen to the speakers. Do they sound good? If so you are done. If not refer to step 5
Step 5. Disconnect the wires.
Step 6. Hook up the other wires. If it sounds good now, your golden. If it still sounds like hammered @!#$, then palm face and start over lol.
Hope that helped.
Crutchfield has connectors that take the factory plugs and go to speaker wire.
I was just going to say that (what Zach said), I was looking at them in a shop when I had some front speakers put in (yes I know if would have been easy, but the install paid for itself because they used some dynamat and the right connectors so I can just swap it out easier.
I just don't know what it was called, It was at futureshop.

Have you? they do have 4 wires running from the factory amp to each speaker. The factory amp has a x-over that divides the signal into 2 outputs a mid and a high. I know infinity kappas have an external crossover that does the same but im not sure if they will be fine on the factory 4 ohm amp since the infinitys are 2-ohm.
buy 6x9 components.... hook the low from the monsoon amp to the woofer and the high to the tweeter and your all set.

If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin

The factory speakers are called "bi-amp" speakers, i.e. having a connection for the highs and a connection for the lows. I believe the Inifinity Kappas are the only aftermarket speaker that have such a connection (although they are ungodly expensive). The Kappas, however, are 2 ohms and may not work. Back in the day, I had a set of 5x7 Kenwood Excelons KFC-X576C that actually were biampable and had the 4 connectors. I'm assuming they also had a 6x9 set too. Unfortunately, such speakers from Kenwood are no longer available. :-(
MA Audio makes bi ampable speakers...check em out
