Any reason not to?
I have a very stealth setup planned this summer which would require putting carpet over two ported subs. I was thinking this might even have a similar effect to aperiodic venting which would be a good thing. Of course I would leave room between the cone and carpet for excursion.
Let me know what you think.
I recommend you use grill cloth and not carpet.

um, going to sound like @!#$ maybe? Cover it with grill cloth and it still retains some stealth but its not going to be all muffled.
And I'm curious as to what this stealth project is that requires you to cover the sub with carpet.
And how exactly do you "muffle" bass? As far as I know bass sound waves should permeate through thin automotive carpet, maybe I'm wrong, but I know that many people actually cover their cones in dense fiberglass to make the speaker perform like its in a bigger box, hence my reference to aperiodic enclosures above, and they don't sound like @!#$, so why would this?
im with you... why would it sound any different?.. look at our rear deck speakers.. there covered with carpet from the factory no?... sure there not in a box or anything... but isnt it the same concept?
I don't think you would hear a difference, nothing noticable anyways
you have to be careful in covering up a port as you may change the design characteristics of the box. for example, i have to keep 4-6 inches clear in front of my port other wise it will not perform properly to the way it was built... but then again mine is also a 4th order bandpass and not a ported enclosure. you could construct a bandpass if you want to keep it more "stealth" like of an install. i only have my port showing as the sub is mounted within the enclosure.

the only thing is that if you blow one then u got to peel all that stuff off to replace one i wouldn't
Make a flush panel in the trunk to go in front of the subs. Leave about 2-3 inches and you will be fine. There is still air flow so you shouldn't harm the subs or have them sound different.

if its built right you have nothing to worry about.

If you're pushing lots of air, the air will just move the carpet anyway
I tore a hole in the carpet when I did this waaaaaaaaay back in high school...
