My car is a 98 2 dr cavalier
My goal is to add bass.
Would removing the rear speakers improve bass?
Also I think the circled area which I dynamated has holes. Should I leave it as it is (covered up) Or should I reopen the holes?
ok lets start simple.
will removing the 6x9s in the rear help more air to get in the cabin which gives me more bass.
THe circled area had holes in the metal which I covered up. Same question, would opening up the holes let airflow in which would give me more bass.
Thats the simplest way I can say it.
help reducing the deck noise from the bass yes......but it won't add bass..... might need to upgrade your equipment to add bass
seal the rear deck completely to improve bass
Time for an upgrade....

OK people, my question was if anybody had experience on if removing the speakerers would actually increase bass or not. Weather it is audible or not and if it makes a difference on the TL. Not get a new box, equipment , i want to maximize the steup I have now, not resort to new setups right away.
I asked because sometimes even the smallest efforts add a point something increase in spl.
no is the answer you seek.
my turn......if ur mom practices swallowing will she stop producing @!#$s?

It may add a tenth or two to you seat up score on the tl, but its not going to help your seat down score or make any audible difference. If you wana get the most out of your current set up, your best bet is going to be a new enclosure. If you looking to inprove your seat up score, you can allways completly gut the deck lid.

lol, no removing speakers does not add bass haha.
i dont know whyd u even think of doing that in the first place, the sound quality would suck huge. I rtecommend you get the 6x9 enclosures and put them around the speakers. IF you leave the 6x9 there and open the bass from the subs in the trunk will actually go thru them and distort the noise. Leave them there just seal them up. The bass will come thru ur seat lots, put ur seats down if u want, i do, its not a lot louder but it allows me to see it all lol.
Ok so removing speakers does not have any audible affect and may only add .1 on the TL, gotcha.
Yes I know building a new enclosure for my sub would make the most difference, but why not do all the steps you can to optimize what you have now. Probably just seal up that area though, see if it makes a difference.
btw brad, I actually find putting the seats down to have a significant difference. But probably because of my set up.
if you run a second battery in to the trunk it will sound better because your amp will be able to get all the power it needs instead of half assing it from like your headlights being the radio etc... this way the amp will draw direct power from the second battery in the trunk.... problem solved...

wrong, and it has nothing to do with the question

To accomplish what you're describing, most people ad a capacitor (if you don't know, a capacity is wired in parallel between the battery and amp and ensures that the amp always recieves a clean 14.4 no matter what is going on in the engine/headlights/etc.)
It will not increase your bass.
what a cap? they are a waste of money.....lets not start this again......

shhhhh its been a while since its come up. it might be fun.
little things like the original poster stated can help your bass level out. BUT unless your competing where 0.1 db may mean the diffrence between win or lose its really not worth the time or effort. noone is going to care if you say you hit 130 or 130.2 unless your in competiton. anything less then a 3db increase is going to be hard to even realise or notice.

thanks for the contribution.
I should have started a thread stating "what are the small things you can do to increase your score."
I find a .2 db is still important for me. Ie. If your score is 139.8, and u only want that .2 to call say u hit 140db.
and just for the record, just to avoid all the nonsense that happened in this thread.
SEALING the speaker holes is a better idea rather than leaving them open? right??
yes, if you're going for loudness:
sealed speaker holes = smaller passage for the subwoofer to push air through :: smaller passage = greater force than same energy pushed through larger passage = yes
PS Caps are useful but 90% of people don't need them or buy them for the wrong reasons. Enough said.
i really doubt you will see any diffrence wether those holes were open or closed. without doing some other changes. if you want to seal them up. seal everything up. all the holes on the rear deck including over top of the area where the seatbetlts are. (this will likely require some fiberglassing, then seal up the panels below the back windows, this is an open path into the trunk so seal that up as well. then face the subs forward and seal the box up to the opening itself. you have now removed the trunk entirely from the equation and are now pressurizing allot smaller area. this will give you some increase in bass. if i remember right one of the guys on here gained 1-2 dbs this way. if your not sealing anything else up and just sealing up the two 6x9's holes your not really going to effect it because there are several other holes just in the rear deck itself. think of a car sinking in a pond, if all 4 windows are down water is going to get in pretty fast, closing one window halfway really isnt going to slow the water, if your going to roll them up. roll them all up.

true.
i was just thinking if your going for an equal ratio of sound quality and bass loudness, id seal the 6x9's because the pressure in the truck will distort the sound coming out of the 6x9's. But sndsgood has a good point, better seal them all up while ur there. cheers!
I've noticed that the bass from my subwoofers get louder when I fold my back seat down...
Dude...^^^^...don't you read? What you just stated is already in this post.
