HELP!! subwoofer noise
Sunday, January 24, 2010 11:07 AM
when i have my music on, one of my subwoofers make a noise like maybe a distortion or something but my other one is fine. they are brand new subwoofers with a 600wat mtx amp and 2 600 watt mtx subs. when i apply a tiny bit of pressure on the bottom of the sub the noise stops, something loose maybe ??? dont know whats going on.

sounds like your sun isn't screwed in tight enough to your box. If your box is carpeted, try taking the sub out of the box and cutting a 1/2 inch ring of carpet from around the hole. This will expose the mdf and help ya seal it better. Just make sure the mdf is nice and smooth. ta da! Problem solved

Ohh ok. Misunderstanding. Did you check your surround for holes or cracks?

I honestly wouldn't think so. I mean subs today are engineered and built to handle the cold weather but either way check that and let us know

i just got some info on my subs and amp, my amp does 300 Watts RMS x 1 Channel at 2 Ohms , and i have 2 jackhammer subs that are Single 4 Ohms and its Peak: 500 watts (1000 Watt Pair) , RMS: 250 watts (500 Watt Pair) .. i know its not the best but i got it all for christmas lol, does the amp make not enough or to much power to the subs? i dont know im very new to this.

Well you're only runnin about 150 to each sub with your current setup. I personally always SLIGHTLY overpower my subs. In your instance, I would look for a 600-650 watt x 1 channel @ 2 ohms. That way you'll be pushing roughly 300-325 watts to each sub, again slightly overpowered but it'll sound a but cleaner and pound harder. Underpowering subs is def. More harmful than overpowering them

Can you get a video of the sound or describe it better? Is it a knocking, a slapping or does it sound flat? Neither?

Have you cranked the subs when theyre still cold? Though they are designed for cold weather -25 is kinda extreme and you should run your system too hard until the car is warmed up a little but.

Pull the sub out and check it out all over. You may have just gotten a defective sub.

How about some model numbers for the subs and amp?

The number for the sub is (MTX Jack Hammer JH451204) i believe, whenever it is cold out i let my car warm up and subs are down low then turn it up higher slightly after like 5 mins i have a video of the subs on youtube .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=_BdBRGB2W-E You notice the noise at like 32 seconds in, its not the cam but the noise sound like 32 seconds in but its only when the subs are on lower volume, its the sub on the left. and also dont mind my car its all in pieces and it has body filler all over and such, i lost all of my interior u dont see in it from a shed fire.

Turn the box around. Theyre going to sound funny turned that way.

Whats the low pass on the amp set at?

Check the surround along where it meets the basket. It may be coming loose.

x-over is good
subsonic is good if its sealed, if ported i would put it to about 30 hz
boost you should put to the lowest and use only the gain.
gain, use the how to set your gains post to set it properly with a DMM.

and like sundown said turn the subs around, you wont hear the nasty mechanical noises of the sub and you may or may not gain output. but it could be because of the cold, due to the sub having the rubber surrond in cold temperatures rubber gets brittle and hard, this is why you should buy winter tires, some subwoofer companies dont think of the blistering cold some places have. one day before starting up your car try to move the cone in and out and see how stuff it is. maybe tap on the rubber surround and see if its hard, its supposed to be soft and easy to move. this is why i like foam surround, they dont get as hard in the cold, and you only have to worry about the spiders getting stiff.

but definatly take each woofer out and compare the 2, look at the motors and the spiders and all that stuff to see if there is somthing loose that will create noise. report back with any findings.

thanks everyone for your help but i think i dfound out the problem i took them both out and did not notice a diffrence but however the problem was it was to cold out and it froze the rubber surround and made it sound like it was vibrating weird, thank god lol

I got a same kind of problem with my set up.
Im running a Kenwood deck w/ single RC output
2 10 and a 1000watt amp. the brand is SPX everything was a kit and rated right.
I scraped the wiring kit and did heavy gauge everything but the remote signal wire.
Now when I turn on the radio the subs sounds nice and good right, when I turn the car on and the amp turns on my subs
make a loud hard deep thump over and over like a helicopter. If I turn down the vol. all the way you can hear it still, and its just the
subs not my speakers running from the deck. When I discon. the RCA leads to the amp the thumps go away and so does the music so its not a crossed wire.

I read up and tried to move the RCA leads away from the power wires, cut the ground to about 2 feet long. nice strong ground bolted in.
Still no fix I can tell it has to do something with the ignition system cuz when I drive the car I can hear the ignition noise in the subs, as I rev the noise grows.
So I hooked up a volt- gauge to the ignition system fuse and watched it.
When I idle and the music is off the volts rapidly jump back and forth from about a normal 14volts to around 10volts really fast.
I rev up and it reads a steady 14-13 volts.

So thinking the noise was from ignition electrical interferance I bought a in-line ground loop noise reduction box thinking it would do the trick.
Plug it in and got no sound from the amp at all!! The amp has power but is not getting a signal. So I played around with it and tried plug-in one lead and then hooking the other lead right in the amp,
and the one straite in get sound but its got that thumping!!

I don't think my deck I bad and my amp is running right to the battery like normal.

I don't want to replace my spark plug wires just yet but, if I double check the speaker wires and nothing works I just might.

Any thoughts?

I still think you have a ground issue. Hard telling not being able to be there and diagnose it. But I will say I would appreciate you not giving audio advice if you, yourself, need so much of it. Seriously...The last thing an informative forum needs is someone talking like they know, and giving bad info...

Ground the outer part fo your RCA terminal on the back of you radio

Re: HELP!! subwoofer noise

First off little boy you didn't read the post right if you think I don't know think I know what I'm talking about. I have trouble with this and did all of the trouble shooting needed to fix the problem.
I re-did the ground wire and cut it really shot and and grounded off the wire in-between the drivers seat bracket after grinding down the paint for a sure connect, then bought a ground loop wire box to try and further fix the possiblity of a bad ground wire connect some where in the system. The trouble was when I installed the box and got no sound at all. I was thinking maybe the pre-out was to low a signal strength, or ignition noise was the bandit. So f# off.

And the advice I gave that guy on a budget speaker selection dosen't take expert knowledge. So why don't you and that monkey go play with something aside the keyboard.

Driver seat bracket is a very dirty ground to start with and I dont think you know what Im talking about. Ground loop isolator boxes wont fix your problem. Theyre just a Wal Mart band aid.

I know what Im talking about dumbass. Wrap a bare wire around the outside of the RCA on the back of your head unit and ground it to the radio case.

I had the same problem. So go do what I said and then tell me to "@!#$ off."

Thank you and have a nice day.

I wasn't talking to you, damn can't you read either?
I was refering to the guy who posted above your, didn't you see the comments about playing with the monkey, and giving bad advice?
He was bashing on another post thats why he got the cold shoulder.
So read next time before you try and get brave with some who an't talking to you!
