EBAY TURBOS

Yes yes I know they have been discussed before and what not, I just bought the cheapest T3/T4 just to use it on my project to fit everything up. Its NOT the one Im using. Ill go with garrett when I have gotten everything fit up. But my question is... Has anyone ever bought one and HAD if fail or actually had problems with them?

Its about the luck of the draw. I had one for 2 days and the oil seals failed!! It was relitively junk. Oh well. Maybe it will last. Maybe it will fail. Maybe it will kill your engine. Good luck.

just curious but why not get the turbo you plan to get and use that to mock it up? then you are 100% sure that its the right one and fits right.

Actually when I got the cheap ebay turbo i set the whole system up. I then went out and bought a same trim, t3\t4 garrett and it fit just as perfectly. So there is little difference in the housings.

BUT I also know that a garrett houseing will fit on a JDM turbo and vice versa. lol

but why spend the money on a turbo you dont plan to use? why not just spend the money once, get the one you want, the one you plan to use, mock it up, done and done.

if you say well i want something to run while such and such is getting done to my good turbo.... well in my opinion then whoever that is, is in too much of a hurry and needs to slow down, take their time and do it right.

the only way i can see using it is someone is going really cheap on their car and not really caring or they have too much money than they know what to do with and are just wasting it.

i have heard the goods and bads of ebay turbo's, 97.336% bad. and the next thing i hear from that is, the ebay company wont warranty it.... no @!#$... i have a warranty from garrett and from atp on mine. id trust the ebay turbo about as far as i can throw it.

Just so you know, EBAY THE COMPANY DOESNT SELL TURBO's!!!

I dont know if you know how Ebay works... BUT, Ebay the company just opperates the site. They have no financial liability to any of the products that are used on there cost. So your blaming the wrong people. Blame the WHOLESALERs and RESELLERS!

Anyway, wasting the money for sizing and installation purposes, i dont see anything wrong with. I dont see anything wrong with running the Ebay turbo for a while to make sure all is good. The worst feeling in the world would be putting on a new Garrett and then finding out later you screwed something up durring the install and ruined a NEW GARRETT!!!

Id be much happier testing the cheap one, as long as I felt confident it wouldnt hurt the motor. I havent had problems yet.

im very familiar with ebay. i know the wholesalers and resellers sell them. but when it goes bad, the whole saler more than likely wont help you. for example, i got my wideband from karo, could have got it cheaper from ebay but the place i was getting it from was not an authorized retailer, which means, no support whatsoever from innovate because they were not an authorized retailer, my lc-1 was bad in the box from innovate and called them, told them where i bought it, he was an authorized retailer, new lc-1 on the way.

you know how you use the garrett and dont mess it up during install? patience. if you take your time, do it right, then you shouldnt have to worry about screwing anything up. you should be able to mock up, test, tune, run with one turbo and be fine, if you take the right steps. if you do everything right and take your time, then you shouldnt screw anything up during the install.

i did my own turbo install, with a pre-owned, custom manifold that was made with the wastegate on the bottom. through out all of the mock up for the charge pipes, exhaust, oil lines, everything, i use the same garrett turbo. when i was just bolting stuff on for test fit, i tapped off the inlet, exhaust and outlet of the turbo so nothing would get in it. when it was away to jet hot, i was still buying the other parts i needed and i had the compressor side and wheel in a bag in my room. i just cant see spending $200-300 for a turbo your taking a chance on when you can start off with a good one for double that price and be done with it. i have a hell of a warranty on mine.

i love this quote from the auction...((NOTE: Photos may not be exact and should be used as a representative display. Unless buyer specifies differently, a like item of equal quality, value, or performance may be substituted if necessary to complete the kit components))

thats awesome.... not.

sorry im more of a... do it once, do it right the first time kind of guy.

LOL ^^ your not seeing the point of the purchase. Since I have the 3400 motor in my car space is tight. Id rather throw away the $180 bucks on the ebay one to see if i can even fit it in my engine bay than buy a $900-$1200 garrett one and have it not fit. Get my point? The ebay one is EXACTLY the same as the one that I have already talked to garrett dealers about. I dont know about you but I dont have that kind of money to be throwing away.

i used an ebay turbo for about a year before i took my kit off, according to the honda forums all u need is an oil restrictor because if not the high oil pressure will ruin the seals.

Re: EBAY TURBOS

i has the smallest restrictor i could find, oil seals still went out.... just my luck i guess

Me 2, I used the restrictor and it still failed. By my fault I believe. I still use the restrictor, and believe me there is still so much oil that still gets by.

No, it's less money than would have been thrown away if he had bought the garret turbo and it didn't fit...

Re: EBAY TURBOS

a more appropriate question is has anyone bought one that didn't need to be rebuilt almost immediately?

turbos (unless being sold used by a user, not a "shop") sold on ebay are junk.

i said isnt it the same as throwing money away and you say.... no it would be throwing less money away.... isnt that still throwing money away? it just seems pointless to spend that much $ on a turbo off of ebay when you can get a good one, and if its the wrong one, echange it, and only have to do it once... that makes more sense to me than buying an ebay one that is the same size as the garrett.

Ur missing the point. IF HE SCREWED UP HE HAS TO BUY A NEW EXPENSIVE TURBO!!

Most can not do a project the first time without making a mistake. Mistakes are bound to happen. You cant just say "Put the expensive one on and do it right the first time." Most of the times anything you do to the car you make a mistake. EVERYBODY makes a mistake on everything they work on. Its just depends on if you catch it immediatley and correct it before you even put it back together or if you dont find out till its destroyed.

This being his first time, I would assume he didnt have the experience to catch a little mistake that could cost the life of the turbo.

if he screws up he has to buy a new ebay turbo too and then is stuck with the one he had. as for mistakes go, the only one i ran into that i had to change was a $9 oil pan fitting i had to replace with a 90 degree fitting and teflon paste instead of teflon tape. other than that, i took my time and didnt have any mistakes that you claim EVERYBODY makes. it took me 8 months to put the turbo kit on for a reason, 1. winter 2. patience 3. ordered parts as i needed 4. sent parts off to be coated or improved. 5. took my sweet time double checking as i went.

your missing the point, i know if i call up garrett i can get dimensions of ANY turbo they sell. i can get any measurement i need. believe me, i had to flip my turbo about 5 times before i figured out the best way to run it. i would call whoever you are buying a turbo from when you decide to and get dimensions from them. i cant see spending upwards of $400 for an "ebay" turbo just to be like whoops thats not gonna fit, buy another, well that ones gonna fit but now i need to get my good one... or, what you could do, buy the good one you plan on using, if it doesnt fit, sell it. i bet you could get more for a brand new never used garrett, than you could a mocked up ebay turbo.... and like i said, i had the option to exchange mine back if it didnt fit. just depends on how much money you want to waste before you get it right. what if the first ebay turbo is wrong? then what if the second one is? or the third?

i know i make mistakes, but when im doing a $7000-8000 turbo kit, i dont make mistakes. i check twice, then i ended up checking a 3rd time.

I spent $180 shipped lol T3T4 .50 trim .63AR internally gated. Dimensions can only get you so far without actually having the part in your hands and able to move it around and fit it up.
