Hello all,
The automatic transmission in my wife’s car just crapped out. Her car is a 1996 2.2. There is a 1997 2.2 automatic transmission for sale locally, will it be a direct bolt-on to my wife’s car? If so, how hard is the installation?
Should be, the TH125C (3t40) was used in the older 2nd Gen J-Bodys, dunno about the 4t40e, if they changed at all during the years, but i would think from 96-97 they should be pretty much the same.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to fond the exact production numbers, but I haven’t had much luck. I don't want to buy the transmission and have it not fit. An extra transmission laying around the house is not what I need.

do you have a 3spd or 4 spd trans? The 3rd Gen 3spds are all the same, and so are the 4spds for the 2.2/2200...... you just need to know which one you have.

I believe the transmission is the 3 speed. My wife has the standard Cavalier not the ls/z24 (?) Is there anyway I can tell via my VIN number about my tranny?
Or can I upgrade to a 4 speed? Is this possible?
if its the 3t40 (3 speed) the big give away is that it says D21, if its the 4t40e (4speed), it'll say D321. Swapping from a 3 spd (if you have it) or a 4 speed isnt exactly easy, i would want to think for starters that the mounts are different (as are axles). The 4 speed is an electronicly shifted trans, so you would need a computer from a car that has that motor and trans combo. There maybe other things like wiring etc that may have to be swapped out as well, ive never personally swapped one out, but know just enough about the two trans's. My old 94 Sunbird has the same 3spd thats used the newer 3rd Gen J-Body's, if that helps.

Are the numbers located in the VIN or directly on the transmission?
This should be a fun afternoon project - or not.
The numbers are on the shift indicator on your dash and next to your shifter on your console.

Also, how many miles can I expect from my 3 spd. auto? I change the tranny fluid regularly.
