2002 Sunfire 2.2L Transmission Issues!!
Monday, May 21, 2007 6:34 AM
I have a 2002 Sunfire 2.2L with manual transmission. Im having trouble with the shifting of the car. It revs high in order to go into gear. There arent any noises or jerks. When I go from first to second the shift goes perfect, but when I let off the clutch in second my RPMs raise but the car isnt accelerating as quickly as it should.

Im thinking that my clutch may be going out, so I checked the clutch hydraulic fluid. It was bone dry. So I added some DOT 3 Brake fluid. I did so because that is what it is said to use for it.

My question is.......................Does it soud like this is a tranny problem or a clutch problem?
It does this on every gear that I shift to. When I take off from first gear, the car feels like it responds to the gear change like a couple of seconds after I shift.

This car is my DD and it has seen some serious miles eventhough it only has 83k give or take on it.

I will take any help provided! I am a noob at transmissions. Thanks!!

Not a tranny problem. Could be a clutch problem... I would look into a cause for why you had no fluid in the resevoir...Maybe a leaking slave cylinder or a throwout bearing problem . A leaking cylinder could cause oil soaked linings and result in a slipping clutch. Your clutch could just be severly worn...

Well, if you do need a trans, I have a '02 5 spd w/ 76K miles on it.

First.........How do I check to see if the slave cylinder is leaking?
Second......I looked under my car and noticed a small yet noticiable leak but it looked as if it was coming from the oil pan gasket.(Which I plan on fixing this weekend)
Third..... Ive put more fluid in and it hasnt leaked out yet.
Im hoping that all I need is a new clutch. Im eyeing a SPec Stage 1, but if i find a cheaper simple stock clutch then Im going with it. Im not into racing so any workable clutch would do.

How hard is it to replace a clutch? Does the engine have to be pulled? Sorry for the noob questions. Im not an expert at tranny work.

Thanks for the help so far!!
