Whats the best way to remove the 4t40e? I've dropped the whole sub frame before but is there not an easier way?

Nope, subrame is the way to go, unless like Brad said, pull the engine.

NO NO NO NO, THIS HOW TO DO IT STEP BY STEP!

FLOOR JACK
just jack up the car. put it on stands(NOT ON THE SUBFRAME OR ANY SUSPENSION PARTS.) and then unhook everything from the motor and tranny(PLUGS AND HOSES) and drain the the nessecary fluids so you not drippin on your driveway then then take off your wheels and unhook your cv shafts from the assembly hub and leave the shocks hooked up to hub and if you need to unbolt from tower to remove the shafts do so and then put them back or you will die when you drop the motor and tranny together (MAKE SURE YOU HOOK THE SHOCKS BACK UP TO THE TOWERS) then make sure you hooked the shock mounts up the towers on each side. then unbolt bottom sub-frame bolts then when you are done unhook the motor mounts and then the shock mounts at the towers and drop the engine out with the THE JACK (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FRIEND HELP TO HOLD THE MOTOR AND MAKE SURE YOUR NOT CAUGHT ON SOMETHIN) not only willl you drop out the motor and tranny but you will drop out the sub-frame and your whole fron suspension. then you can rebuild your motor and clean the subframe and repaint if you want and replace sub fram parts if you need to. like new polyurethane bushings !

ENGINE HOIST
just jack up the car. put it on stands(NOT ON THE SUBFRAME OR ANY SUSPENSION PARTS.) and then unhook everything from the motor and tranny(PLUGS AND HOSES) and drain the the nessecary fluids so you not drippin on your driveway then hook engine hoist to motor and tranny. then unbolt bottom sub-frame bolts then when you are done unhook the motor mounts and then the shock mounts at the towers and drop the engine out with ENGINE HOIST, (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FRIEND HELP TO HOLD THE MOTOR AND MAKE SURE YOUR NOT CAUGHT ON SOMETHIN) not only willl you drop out the motor and tranny but you will drop out the sub-frame and your whole fron suspension. then you can rebuild your motor and clean the subframe and repaint if you want and replace sub fram parts if you need to. like new polyurethane bushings !

HOPE THIS HELPS!

yes, that is why the forums are here. but theres no point in dropping the entire front section of the car/drivetrain when its not needed.

its way more work then is nessesary.

ya i know its not nessacary to drop the whole front end but its easier to due swaps and you can use air tools and get the right angle instead of snappin bolts and grindin heads. that and figured if you gonna replace the tranny you can add new bushings and stuff that is needed instead of unbolting piece by piece. but yeah what did you do wrong?whats it doin? rockin to much could be a mount. or did you forget a bolt on the sub frame. did you mess up a sensor.or forget to plug one in? double check everything top and bottom and ask a friend to help 4 eyes are sometimes better than 2.

how did you determine the TCC switch was bad? ive always heard that its just easier to replace the tranny than to try to fix it. i had to drop mine to replace the TC and if something went wrong and i had to do it again rihgt afterwards, i think i would shoot someone. what a PITA

lets start from the beginning it started to shift into high gear all the time.... my cel said tcc circuit stuck on so i checked the wires all tested good. then did the whole drop thing, replaced all the solenoids and tc... put it all back together then shifted even harder and cel said same thing... so i thought maybe i should check the wires again. did that put the car back together and now it doesnt throw a cel at all, shifts smoother, and when they monitored my car with the computer at the trans place once my car went in to a close loop it would never engage the tcc lock up circuit. so now i'm even more confused

hi there,
according to HAYNES manual, the best way to remove a 4t40e is:
-disconnect all fittings
-drain fluids
-jack vehicule
-remove driver wheel, strut, axle and inner fender
-remove all trans to engine bolts
-slide tranny out
this only a summary, the manual goes into way more detail.
the advantages is that the engine stays in place, as well as the supports.
looks like i may be trying it very shortly.... will post an update

you cant "slide" the tranny out there. it doesnt fit

Well it was a long time ago that I had to do that exact same job for that exact same problem... But if I remember correctly I had to loosen some bolts that went trough the flywheel to the TCC. They could be located throught the starter hole. I could then drop the tranny almost straight out. Just took a little manuvering and a floor jack with a strap.
