Say you were in a hurry to get home because you knew it was about 12 and you knew you had to be home by then. Thats probbaly the best way to get out of that one (if possible) but for the speeding, slow it on down!!

Heres the deal with speeding tickets...

A cop has to zap you with his radar three times and get the same speed all three time in order to give you a ticket for that speed. If he zapped you at 60, and you said you were goin 85, he can then give you a ticket for 85 because yuou admitted to it. I always say "i dont know".

A cop can legally speed, drive on the wrong side of the road, etc, while in pursuit or on route to an emergency. The lights are simply a warning device to civilians, not a requirement.

Minors cannot drive past curfew (midnight for you being 17 y/o) with the exception of driving to or from work (which you wornt doing). If the cop pulled you over at 11:55, and left you at 11:59, he cannot prove you were driving after midnight, so that, you could fight.

Do not blame the cop for anything. Do not blame your friend for anything. Do not blame the time for anything. If you admit to what you did, but explain why you did it the judge will be more lenient with you.

the only thing I would recomment "fighting" is the after midnight thing, but only if you know the cop can't prove you were driving past midnight.

Ahh yes, your first speeding ticket, I assume? I got mine when I was 17, didn't go to court for it until I was 18. (courts are slow as hell) So therefore I paid less. The best way to handle this is admit to being retarded and hope they're forgiving. (just don't actually say you're retarded. Be as professional as possible)

And if you think getting a speeding ticket is bad, try getting a failure to stop ticket, when you actually stopped at a stop sign. This is a bit off topic (I guess) but I want to tell my story of great injustice.

I had pulled up to a stop sign which was a back off the road a little, with parallel parked cars on the street and a house on one side. Well I waited for one car to go by, and about the time that car went by, another one pulled onto the road. I didn't want to wait for it, so I gave it some gas and pulled out really quick right behind the first car. Well, a cop was comming down the street the opposite way, did a U-turn, and pulled me over. She said I didn't stop at the stop sign, but the fact is that she didn't actually see me stop at the stop sign. her reasoning was "You pulled out way to fast to have stopped". Well, she didnt know how much of a lead foot I was either. Damn her. I ended up paying about 70 something bucks because of it. I lost sleep over that incident. Bah.

THIS IS WHY I BOUGHT A RADAR DETECTOR! Haven't gotten a ticket since

I got one of those!

Little thing beeps its ass off. Ive still gotten pulled over, but no ticket. I dont know if you read my earlier post, but a cops gotta clock you 3 times at the same speed to give you a ticket... so... If you start slowly down when your radar detector goes off, you're good.

whatever you do DONT say that. That would be really stupid. THe judge would just be really pissed. then she would say something like "so you put everyones life on the road in danger cause your didnt give yourself enough time to get home". dont even say it.

as for the stop sign thing, you should be ok, depending on were the sign is, if its on the bowling ally parking lot (not the side walk, or street) at least. Cops have NO controll over stop signs on private property.

and the whole court thing, if its anything like it is here. it will be EASY. i had to go 6 times before i turned 18. got away with 5 of the tickets (4 for speeding) just be honest. the judge here is more concerned with how was doing in school, and my family life. and less concerned with traffic violations. i got off wtih traffic school 5 out of the 6 times cause i was honest with her. dont make excuses, say everything was your fault and you were dumb to do it, and it wont happen again.

200$ isn't a big deal. If this is the biggest of your problems, your life is pretty damn good. Don't lose sleep over it.

In Indiana, under 18 is probationary license. I got caught by 2 cops racing my friends mitsubishi eclipse. One pulled him over and the other me, and he gave us both the same tickets. He said we were going well over 60 but gave us 55 in a 30. Bad thing is I was he was 18 and I was 17(happened the day before I turned 18), so i had to go to court. Judge just gave my 25hrs. of community service instead of $156 ticket which i think was pretty damn ok with me.

I would rather have to go to a driving school than points, its not the money im worried about now its just that i dont know what the judge will say when he looks at admitted 85/55 , do they even look at if i dont fight?

just tell the judge ur a student blah blah and you have alot of money atleast around here that can usually help just be really respectful. ive been to court alot sometimes they just dismiss them if ur polite enough or u could please not guilty and set another date and see if the cop shows up.. if he doesnt show up its completly dismissed.. if he shows up you dont have a greater fine.. worth a try these are CA rules tho not sure if there the same where you're from alot of times CA has bigger problems then traffic violations.. so the cops wont show up. I bought a LCD 2 way pager alarm.. only reason i did because it was cheaper then paying a ticket for ditching school..lol i went to court with the pager and said my alarm was going off.. and they totallaly dismissed it.. as a matter of fact i went to grab the keychain from my pocket and they told me to keep my hands out of my pocket and it was dismissed..lol but have fun and let me know wut happends

No offense but I think instead of giving advice on how to act while in court, we need to tell this kid he is only 16, and speeding in a middle turn lane only is not smart. Im not trying to dog you or anything like that but It was stupid for what you did and I have a feeling if you get off easy your just gonna do something similar again!

I dont blame you one bit, my dad said he was happy the officer was doing his job when he pulled me over. I realize this wasnt smart, in some eyes its very retarded and reckless. I have absolutely no good reason why i was going that fast and past my friend. The only thing I can say is I know my car's abilities and my ablities very well, i would bet since ive been driving almost a year to date my 12,000 miles ive put on my car 1/3 of that was in parking lots learning exactly the boundaries, as same with my friend. Does this give me a good reason for what i did? Hell no. But as everyone of my friends have told me, it wasnt the smartest thing I have done and my story had a big enough impact on me and my friends that we have stopped entirely with our games. It was a huge reality check for me, even without court yet

Hopefully I can get away with nothing, but eh i dunno I hope to god the judge will take in account that if I lose my license my GPA will hit rock bottom, we were told bout this in a session that we have hit a point for co-op if for some reason we cannot go to work there is a chance we will lose credit, not good. On that note I hope he realize I feel horrible and have spent the last 2 weeks rethinking it over and over...

Hey man, for when you go to court, I really have no advice on getting out of anything. However, if they just reduce it to you paying a fine on the ticket, I can tell you how to legally keep it off of your driving record. Therefore, no points, no insurance hikes. If the judge just tells you that you need to pay the fine, here's what you do. When you pay for the ticket, send in a check or money order for one dollar over the fine. Reason for this being...Tickets are assigned case #s same as anything else. In any case where a fine is to be paid, as long as there is money owed concerning that case, the case stays open. The thing is, the state can not refund one dollar from a check (money order is considered a check), so the case stays open, so they can not take points and they can not report to your insurance. Hopefully they let you off pretty easy. First offense usually is. And I don't know about Michigan, but In Cali, cops don't actually show up to court very often, and if that's the case, then they can't do anything, the state is required to provide a witness in order. Hope I helped a little but man, keep us posted on what goes down.

Tim

I was doing 65 in a 35 on my way to work one day. Come around the corner (very windy road) and a cop is just sitting there, and my radar is just going crazy. I didn't even bother to slow down, cause i knew he had me, just waited for him to pull up behind me.
He gave me a ticket for 65/35. He told me the court would send me a notice in the mail that would tell how much i would have to pay. So I waited. When it finally came there were a bunch of post cards from local lawyers. i called one of them and they told me if i paid them $40 they would go to court and get it taken down to a non-moving violation. I couple weeks later, i received another notice from the court. The amount of the ticket was the same as before, but it was brought down to a parking violation. It worked out well since it was never reported to my insurance company. My premium would have most likely doubled.

That's in MO at least. You might be able to do that in CA. I dunna.

Good luck!

the reason why the cop wrote @!#$ down was because or in mass. anyway here is a cop assigned to th ecourt house he represtents the station as a whole.so he takes their notes and uses them to fight a sif the cop was there.

good luck with that ticket man. sounds like your best bet is to just bee polite, admit you were in the wrong, take the hit to the wallet. hopefully he doesn't note you for your admitted 85mph, i was caught doing 89 in a 55. $192 fine, 5 points, take a stupid test, and get a 15 day suspension. then to get my license back i had to pay em another $25.

on top of that, my insurance had a field day with it. they saw the ticket, the test, the points, the losing the license and getting it back all as seperate incidents (i don't see how getting my license back after a suspension is really a negative thing for insurance, they already noted the actually losing it). so they gave me coverage for the remainding 6 months i prepared and dropped me. i've also been involved in two of my cars being totalled, one of which is my fault. with all of that, i'm now paying $2,600 a year for insurance. learn fast and while you can.

I'm making the back of my car look good first.
After all, Civics need something nice to look at...

This is just something to do after court if they decide thatthey are gonna fine you. There are a lot of cases with just that same problem of very mall amounts of money owed in refunds, which they can do nothing about, so the case stays open but is deemed inactive. My mom works for the municipal courts and says that they get a lot of checks with small over payments and she just shuffles them away cause there is nothing that can be done with them. I hope I helped out some, and good luck with everything.

How long does it stay like this, I guess it couldnt hurt if i stuck an extra 2 bucks in my fine.

This is a myth. If you overpay your fine, the court will cut you a check for the amount you paid over. If you don't cash it, thats your problem. To them, the fine is paid, and it is on your record. If you want to look up the myth, and the details surrounding it, go to http://www.snopes.com . I verified this through a family friend (District Attorney for Marinette County), and two police officers.
