The Gm LS1 and preceding motors, the very best small block motor ever

Yup, grandfather to every small block chevy V8 including the LSx. Also:

Chrysler's 426 Hemi
Chrysler's RB Big Block
Chrysler's LA Small Block
Ford Windsor Small Block
Ford Modular Small Block
Buick Big Block
Pontiac V8
Oldsmobile Generation 2 Rocket
Chevrolet Generation 2 Big Block

Notice I speak nothing of Ford big blocks or Cleveland engines. The Ford BB isn't bad, but it's not that fast and the Cleveland is a piece of junk. The holy grail of Ford engines, the Boss 429, is a GIGANTIC piece of junk that needed to be revved like a mother to make any sort of power. History has it that the Boss 302 used to run circles around the nose-heavy 429. The car makes a nice collector piece, but it's expensive to rebuilt and really not that fast.

Which brings in mind the Hemi VS RB big block debate. A well built 440 Six-Pack V8 will annihilate a 426 Hemi engined car. Then, like now, the Hemi was vaunted as this awesome engine. The reality was that it was insanely hard to keep those two huge carburators tuned, that it consumed enough oil to need a pint every time you filled it up, that the manual transmissions and clutches used were hard to shift quickly and that it needed constant maintenance. The Hemi was the best racing engine ever made, but it was made for RACING, not street driving. This engine just isn't comfortable idling anywhere. It stalls and sputters. It's not as bad as the above Boss 429, but that's not saying much. Still, it's on the top of my list simply because the design has survived since the mid-fifties as the best drag racing engine ever and will probably remain so until we run out of gasoline on the planet.

Any Japanese V8's worth mentioning? There must be one.

best 8 cylinder engine for what? stock power? potential? looks? sound?

well, the Ford flathead V8 is the best looking
the 426 Hemi is the best for stock power
and the SBC (any generation) is the best for potential
Ford Mod motor for best sound (not because it's the best-sounding, but because as soon as your hear one, you know exactly what it is)

I meant overall... Ubiquity is one thing to consider, that engine.. there's what, 15 of them? How many Turbofire V8's and descendants are there?

Until you try to mass produce them for regular use, and fuel them.

Big blocks are nice for the power, but they're disproportionately thirsty.

Moto Guzzi V8 just for the "cool factor"

Link

1957, fast, sounds cool. In 1957 a 75HP motorcycle that reved to 12 500 RPM was pretty advanced. Not by today's staandards, but then, oh ya.

The page I liked has exploded diagrams and a sound clip.

It was also a whore on the rag to work on, and it wasn't too friendly when you goosed it.

Maybe that's why it was only on Moto-F1 for 2 years.

I imagine it sucked to work on, but it raced in MotoGP (500cc class) and at the Isle of Mann TT, in '57 only.

As far as being unfriendly, it raced again 500cc 2-strokes.. The wildest pigs on the planet. It was likely considered "smooth" when compared to it's competition.

That's what I meant... thanks Hahahaha

Jay Leno had showed his on a Discovery Program (one where it looked like he had a MAJOR case of bed head) and had said that it was one of the hardest bikes to maintain, drive and work on otherwise.

What about the diesel V8 in the trucks? The 7.3 PSD is bullet proof, and the 6.6 Duramax has some crazy gains with just a tuner.

O noes!

The new LSX Bowtie Block
http://www.gmhightechperformance.com/tech/0702gm_lsx_engine_block/index.html

Main points that hit home.
- everything was done with an eye toward withstanding 2,000-2,500 hp.
- You'll be pleased to hear the LSX Bowtie Block's projected MSRP will be around $2,500, with actual street prices likely in the neighborhood of $1,800 to $1,900.
- 4.25 bore....will accommodate a crank with massive 4.500-inch throws, which translates to cubic inch displacements of well over 500 ci!

All the accessories besides the front cover will bolt up just fine from LS1.

Well... Maybe you haven't seen anyone make a 454 SMALL BLOCK. That's right - not a typo. Plus modern heads available for GM small blocks are way more efficient at making power than those old rectange port heads that they used to put on Big Blocks. Plus there is no aftermarket support for any engine like there is ffor the GM small blocks. Plus the weight difference between the BB and the SB is huge(not even including the aluminum LS series), and considering that nowadays you can really make more power out of the SBs, there is only one choice.

But funny thing, that back in the day, guys who started using SBs got the same crap from BB users that 4 banger users get from everyone else nowadays. The more things change, the more they stay the same lol.

Well the thing is about getting a car with a 305 - besides maybe needing to change head gaskets - is that although you probably want to swap to a 350 later, in the mean time you can buy most any bolt-on parts for your future 350 project and use them now on that 305. The 305 will run respectibly with those parts and all, and you can just take them back off for use on the 350(or more if you're making a stroker - like the 454s I've seen) when you swap. Makes it easier to do things in steps but enjoy the benefits of each step instantly.

I've never heard of this "part throttle" before. Does it just bolt on?

383 Stroker. Of course it runs hot and isn't a production engine, but it's cool, it makes good power and you get bragging rights because you built it. For those who don't know, a SB 400 Crank in a 350 block gives a 383. Makes more power than the SB 400 and doesn't overheat quite as often (actually, it's not realy a problem if your coolant system is up to snuff).

I still like the 327 produced in the late 60s.. Great little engine, torquey as hell. Gotta love it.

My dad actually gave me a '67 Chevy 327 to put in a project car. I still need to get a project car but good to know they're perky.

Great engine, and very buildable. Short stroke, big bore.. Makes good torque and can rev like no other engine from it's time if you balance it. My brother built (I helped a bit) a nice race engine on a 327 block. over bored about .030, 12:1, balanced an blueprinted. I saw it hit 13000 on the tach and not pop. It made about 425 hourse on pump gas through a Holly 750 "Speed Pro" Dual pumper. I only drove it a few times. I dragged it for 2 runs, both low 11s in a street driven 67 Firebird. My brother ran a 10.5 with it, but it was his car to blow up (never happened) . I took it out for one night on the town. It was always ready to GO, always (you didn't have to be ready, it was). After it had run many strip passes, my brother moved it to a 67 chev pickup. That was pretty wild too. If you could get traction, it was possible to throttle bounce it up into a wheelie of sorts.. only about 1.5 - 2 ft up, but it could hold it to the next shift.. Pretty fun.

Then he traded it for a 68 CBR 450 twin and $500
