what year 3.4 is that? I hope its the 96' or newer 3.4 as it has major reworking of the lower and upper intake manifolds from the factory vs. the pre 96' 3.4's. I had a 96 monte carlo z34 with the newer 3.4 and that thing was a beast. When it hit 3500 rpm's it sounded like dual 4 barrel carbs opening up and taking off (this of couse was with an intake on it not the factory intake which kept it very quite). I am sorry i sold it but now that i have seen this, all i can say is wow and get the heck out of the way of this cavy, its going to be very sick!
The engine is out of a 1993 Olds cutlass supreme. We are going back to obd one because of the year of the engine, and i cant seem to find an obd two harness. Doesnt really much matter, I like obd one better any way.
I give you props for doing it! Good luck with it and I would like to see it finished also.
I remember a friend of mine doing a timing belt on one of those years ago... I never heard him bitch soo much..

I would read this site:
http://fiero.cc/fiero-tdc/members/mws/intake/index.html
Then you might change your mind on which 3.4 you really want to use, but that is just my 2 cents.
i hated those in the obd2 cars , they never shifted at red line , according to the tach about 1000 rpm short of redline , and it didnt matter if it you hald it in first it shifted when it wanted to
the older 1's did come with a 5spd atleast in the first 2 years in the Z34 lumina's
i havent looked at the pics yet , since they didnt work in this thread
good luck with the project
werid, my 3.4 dohc was auto and it shiffed at almost redline. If they had made on odbll 3.4 with a manual, that thing would be killer as i could get some good spin through at least 2 gears from a dead stop. The thing i hate about the 3.4 is the timing belt! That thing has to be watched and keep in good condition or bye bye engine ( happened to me one and had to replace the whole engine as it was easer and cheaper than repairing the old one). Same thing with alternator, a good half a day or more depending on what method you use to do it.
lol. Those are issues.
So are rad hoses, fuel lines, accessory brackets, power steering lines, wire harness changes, intake routing, etc.

we did the swap because we were told it couldnt be done!
Always a good reason! This is why I know about things like rad hoses, fuel lines, accessory brackets, power steering lines, wire harness changes, intake routing, etc.
Congrats on a helluva first step.

I'm not to familiar with older J-Body Tranny's and axles, but I'm sure they were never meant to take the grunt of an engine like that. I hope you plan on beefing that tranny and axles up if they aren't capbable of handling that engine. Good luck on the swap

LOL

Actually those are all minor issues, remember that this is not the first time that we have delt with those types of things. Had to do the same things for my s/c 3800 swap and they were all minor issues then as well.

lol...thats what everyone said about my tranny and axles and guess what, they are holding up great. I haven't had one problem with my tranny or axles and I am putting a lot more torque through them than the 3.4 will. Also Brad is not building this car as a drag car, it's being built as a show car so I don't think the tranny will see much abuse. And if the tranny doesn't hold up for some reason he does have the tranny that came with the engine as a back up.
That my friend is nothing. We were thinking issues like moving firewall for brake booster and setting up a different rack system, and extending rad support. They are issues. The other stuff is just fun to do! If anyone calls them issues then they shouldnt even start a swap like this, because you know that this stuff isnt gonna fit in like a glove and go as smooth as putting another 2.4 in the hole.
They are the same, and the older tranny's just like the newer trannys are bullet proof. Guys im not doing this work to my car to kill it. It is a convertable and i am putting alot of time and energy into it. Im not gonna destroy it! Im gonna enjoy it.
Now lets move on to the infamous Northstar swap . LOL

97cavie24ls(JDM cav sedan™) - My engine had bent valves and holes in the piston from the valves hiting the pistons. Thats why the engine was replaced.
Changing the timing belt in 2 hours! I wish there was someone in my area who new that engine good enough to do that. I had to find a shop that would even look at it. Even the GM dealers really didnt want to work on it.
Cant wait to see it running in the car!
nice work on the swap so far... what kind of aftermarket support is available for the 3.4 dohc?
Ever since I started seeing this work happen on the convertable I knew this was going to be a killer cavy. Man that thing is just going to be awsome. Keep up the good work.
Doublezed- I know you aren't trying to kill it, I was just pointing it out in general. Good to know that those trannys are hard to kill.
BTW- What body kit is on the car in those pictures? I think it looks sweet as hell.
