jeez by the time I get to my motor swap every FWD motor is going to be done already...

Maybe I'll be the first to re work the drivetrain for RWD and put in a large V6 (the 4.3) or maybe a small block V8

and don't laugh either cuz despite the cost, I garaunee it can be done for relatively cheap!

camaro rear end, custom 4 link suspension set up, some chassis stiffening, trans mounts, engine mounts

when I get another reliable vehicle and my cavalier with it's OHV (or maybe an eco swap as my firs engine swap =P) is tired and old I'll strip it down bare and build it with rwd

I'll be sure to post pics of that

lol... You're not the first to do RWD J. I've seen 3. The first was big block powered and had plates on it, but it was really a race car with full tube frame, narrowed and tubbed rear, aluminum interior panels. It's still in the Holyoke MA area, AFAIK. Second was seen in Leominster or Fitchburg, MA in 2k or 2k+1 at a Hot Rod Power Tour show. It was a J ragtop with a smallblock under the hood. The giveaways were the exhaust barely showing under the rocker support panels, and a small hood scoop. This was more of a budget project, but was somewhat clean and not too badly done. The third is a 90 J, which is on a 79 Monte Carlo chassis. It fits, believe it or not. You need to run S10 4X4 wheels to get the wheel spacing correct, but it does fit.

The easiest way to do the RWD axle is a set of leaf springs, homemade subframe connectors, welded in driveshaft tunnel, and an 8.5" ring gear from a late S10. If ya want something different, swap in the independent rear suspension from a 280ZX. Just gotta get it redrilled for 5lug.

We were thinking issues like moving firewall for brake booster and setting up a different rack system, and extending rad support. They are issues. The other stuff is just fun to do!

I agree 100%. The reward is opening the hood and watching the faces as people see what ya got. In fact, I just finished the wiring in a 4.3 swap into a 90 Geo Tracker this past Sunday. Why? Same as you. "You'll never make that work."

I think my next "engine" swap will be a set of bicycle cranks installed where the engine should be. That oughta get 'em. "Go ahead. Test the emissions." lol.

BTW- What body kit is on the car in those pictures? I think it looks sweet as hell.

The new aerogear extreme, with a very nice fit btw. I was impressed at how nicely it fit and have to say i really like the look of it.
First off let me give you some props on that swap. I had to yank a 3.4 dohc from my old z34 to change the leaking freezeplugs between the engine and the tranny. It was a tight fit on a w-body so I know it was tight on a J. Keep us posted with some pics.

If that's the 3.4(X) motor that I'm thinking of, you would be better off changing all the
timing belt pulleys/bearing & putting a new belt on it before you run it. I know when I
worked at the dealership, I used to sell about 2-3 of those timing belt jobs every week,
& it cost the customer over a GRAND in repairs. I personally don't care for that motor &
some would argue (including me) that it was the worst design GM ever made.

But oh, well. Props on the install. I give you respect for the balls to do it, but I give you
simpathy when it breaks. lol

The engine will be built, and yes i do understand that gm didnt put them in everything as a quad cam. I know that they did have some issues, but for the most part the produce decent power, they look very nice as a design, and yes this will be built with everything new. This is being done for show and go, but mostly for show. I dont feel like killing this car after putting so much time and effort into it. Thanks for the comments and compliments.
is it going to be street legal?

Deffinitly, there is no law stating that you cannot do that. As long as i own the car there will no problems, and since im keeping the car, there wont be an issue.
Good job Doublezed! I want to do this on my cavalier but it's manual and I would like to keep it like that. I know you can bypass the automatic trans shift solenoid by using resistors so the computer ''think'' he's shifting but for the speedo and such thing, is there a way to make it work. How we can remove the rpm cut off.

Thank you!!

the first rear drive J would be the pontiac J2000 hatch back that rick doberton(spelling) built , with a twin turbo , twin super charged , big block full tube frame , tilt front end , and tilt up body

I'm impressed that you got that thin g in thier. Props to ya, but I notive the timing belt is gone. Have you ever but timing belt on one of them? It is one of the hardest I've had to work on, you will have to remove the valve covers and upper intake to set the timing. And it is nearly impossible to do with out the j tools or special tools from the one of the tool trucks. I hope it was on when you got the engine. Any way good luck.
