August 5 - 8, 1999
Lordstown, OH
On August 4th through 8th, 1999, Chevy Cavaliers and Pontiac Sunfires (affectionately known as J-Bodies) from across the nation appeared in Lordstown, Ohio for the 2nd Annual International J-Body Bash. Black, White, Red, Blue, Green, Maroon, Gold... You name the color and it was more than likely proudly represented by one of the attendees.
The early arrivals got there Wednesday and attended a local cruise that evening at the Dairy Queen.
Thursday, was the big day everyone had been waiting for. The GM Lordstown Plant tour. Where most of cars were built. Everyone awoke early to get their cars all shined up and ready to show GM what a J-Body should look like. Then, sure enough, as soon as everyone was polishing the last bit of chrome, the skies let loose just enough rain to dampen our spirits. Arghhhh. But I guess we were determined enough to make it stop raining that it did, and we wiped our cars down and went ahead with the plans. GM brought out some concept cars for us to drool over, and then gave us the tour. We parked our cars outside to let the GM employees take a look at what had happened to a few of their old productions.
Friday was a quiet day overall. Some of us went to Cleveland to do some sightseeing, while others slept in and recovered from our "illnesses".
Saturday was the car show in Lordstown. Everyone had fun washing, waxing, polishing, and detailing their cars for the public car show. Trophies were handed out in several categories at the end of the day. Some went home with one, some didn't. But all had a great time.
A few people stayed around Sunday for an AutoX held in Pennsylvania. But most everyone else went home happy to have talked with other enthusiasts, to have learned new tricks (whether they be subtle or wild), and to have participated in an event that made GM, as well as the Aftermarket companies, look our way.
