Ok here is the deal. First, I took my car to have a tec 3 installed, by a electromotive recommended dealer, and it ended up taking them 6 months, when he told me two weeks, to do it because they had “problems.” He had installed the Tec 3 with a new map sensor and injectors. I paid the guy to install the system and to tune the car which ended up costing me a lot of money. I had my car back from this guy for less then 3 weeks. In which I drove it three times. I came out to my car one day and it just stopped starting. So I took it to another shop locally, since the guy who installed the tec is a three hour drive away, plus I did not want him to have it for another 6 months. The local mechanic found that a wire had been sliced due to the fact it was to close to a belt. Now these guys are mechanics and checked over everything extensively, this will be important later
. So we fixed the wire, but upon fixing the wire we realized that when the wire was cut it must have shorted out the sensor. So I had to buy a new sensor from, the guy in lakeland. I do not think I should have had to pay for that but I did not want to argue at the time I wanted the car back. When we got the new sensor went to fire it up and nothing. Now, keep in mind I have been talking to the guy who installed this system back and forth so he knows I have not been driving the car. So I finally just started asking how much it would cost, per hour, for him to travel here and fix this problem. He quoted me 97 cents a mile, to come here, and one hundred dollars and hour, on the situation that it was not his fault. He said if it was his fault it would not cost me anything. But, before he came down he wanted me to swap out the map sensor and check to see if that was the problem. So we did that but the car still did not start. So the guy who installed the tec made an appointment with me to come down and fix the car. But, when the weekend came he was sick and had to send his assistant down to fix the car. First, he was supposed to be here at 10 so me and the guy who owned the shop down here had to meet him at 10 at the local shop which is closed on weekends. The local mechanic opened his shop especially for me on a weekend. Well the tec guy did not show up till 1230 almost one. Next he rode down on a gsx-r with no tools what so ever. Kind of weird I would think, seeing that he had to fix a car. Well he had to barrow tools from the mechanic here; luckily the local guy is a really nice guy and did not mind too much. He reloaded a program, I don’t know what he had changed, swapped spark plugs, that I had, and the car fired up after a little hesitation and tinker more with the program. It was a little ruff at first but he ran the idle up to 4000 for a few minutes to burn out the fuel. So I was happy the car started, we showed him the problems we had found before he got there and he apologized for the wiring and such. I asked him before he left how much I owe him he told me 165.00. I was like ok, I do not mind paying the miles it was a lot less then what the tow bill would have been, so no biggie. Even though technically I didn’t think I should have had to pay him that. He told me that it was the map sensor that was bad and when we swapped the sensor it fixed the problems. That was all, then he left, he was a nice guy and I said I would see him later. No biggie, problem solved now the mechanic who had been working on the car said it was bs that only the spark plugs were wrong but he let it go...hell the car was running and I had been without the car for a year. Now I receive an email today:
Hey thought I'd check in and see how the cars running and need to collect. for Allen's time .
He said you paid by check for mileage and owed 3 hours work time on site..
$300.00 let me know if your sending another check or use c.card. Allen also mentioned you have a light staying on on the tec unit . Noise from some component in the car not letting it shutdown properly. we can fix that when time permits and you can get the car up here.
Should I pay him the extra three hundred dollars? First Allen, the tec guy, told me at the job I only owed him 165 which I paid. Second it was their fault in the first place it did not run. Hell I ended up paying the local mechanic over 1000 dollars for fixing the problems he caused, which I never asked for any of the money back. Third it was not only the spark plugs, which were causing it not to run, I paid them money to tune it in the first place and he was playing with the program to get it to start. Next, he came down here with no tools and almost nothing. This tends to lead everyone I talked to, to the idea that they knew exactly what was wrong with the car. I mean I am not asking them to pay for the stuff I had to fix by myself. I would be fired if I ever left a house in as poor shape as my car was when I got it back. Sorry, people, this is so long but I just want to know what you guys would do in this situation.
I will get a copy of it when I recieve my statement next month.
Your bank should be able to print it off for you, I can even see copies of my checks I write around a day after they clear my bank.
I would approach them about that, as for the on-site shop rates, figure out how long he was there, and say, that he had told you that it was $165 and you paid in full, and have the check or statement to prove it. If thats what he told you to pay, then they should take the other $135 out of the techs paycheck, because you don't owe it to them, you paid.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
Na man the 165 was for the mileage that he had to drive to come down here. The three hundred would be the labor he spent to fix it? But, you think I should pay for them to fix there own mistake, just wondering?
That whole mess sounds fishy. I wouldn't pay that guy another dime.

if there was something wrong w/ the wiring, wasnt that his part that he did? if so then you dont owe him anything
I wouldn't pay a cent man... the problems all started after he put his hands in the car. pay for the service, don't pay for any additional problems that have come up. He should have done it right and he should pay for replacement parts out of his own pocket me thinks.
honestly... find a lawyer. you may have a case if it goes that far.
Send him a bill for $1000 for shop time and tool rental. .97 a miles is insane, double insane for someone on a bike. Especially when they can claim .33 1/2 a mile on taxes.
Where abouts in fl did you have this work done?
Regardless, I wouldn't have even paid the 165. You payed the guy good money to do the job right the first time. He said it would only take 2 weeks and it took him almost a year? I don't think so. Don't put up with his crap.
I am in Cape Coral and the work was done in Lakeland, Zach. FstCav that's a good idea "Send him a bill for $1000 for shop time and tool rental." I never thought about doing that. Thanks everyone else for your opinions. Anyone else got any thoughts on this, I am thinking he is not going to get any more money.
definitely get on the telephone and bitch his ass out over EVERYTHING. in the end, you will both probably come to the conclusion that you will not pay him anything else. i wouldve said to have the work done for NOTHING, but in the end, i think you should just let that go (the 165). if anything, take him to court, and it'll be done with.

gary.... my advice in a situation like this is always the same. it sounds to me like you have some jerk who is just trying to make a quick buck. u know it and so does the jerk. if you paid him to install it..... and install it right, you shouldnt have to pay for the second time. paying for the mileage is more than i would have done.
here is what i would do. first of all.... research the situation.. if you have a friend or anyone who knows a lawyer.... ask for their advice, but not if its going to cost you.
if you go into this thing knowing you are smarter than this guy... you won't pay another penny.
i would get a reciept from the shop that you already paid for and send that to this guy too. if you've already paid for it and he doesn't know that, he would much rather take care of the $300 "you owe him" than $1000.
good luck man, this whole thing sounds like it suck!

i agree with fstcav , send them a bill from the other shop , and have the guy from the other shop include tool rental fee's
also like you said the fee for them to drive down to look at it , would be cheaper than towing the car up there , and i most likely woulda paid that also
but anything else i wouldnt have paid for
allthough id buy the guy at the shop that loaned the guy tools and work space , a steak diner and some beer , LOL , it seams as if he was a great guy for allowing it
did he use any of your tools to work with, im assuming he had to use a socket to get the spark plug out. i'd send them a bill for 300$ for use of your tools. tell them as soon as you get your tool rental payment, youlle send them the 300$ u owe them.
the car should have been running right when it left their shop. this reapair should have been on their own dime.

Novel idea I wonder why someone didn't think of that one sooner. Say eight posts from the top.
Ok I figured I would give you guys an update about the situation. I wrote the guy back and told him, "In your emails, which I still have, YOU said if it was your fault I would not owe you any money. It was YOUR fault therefore you will get no more money from me." Well he did not like that and sent me this email:
HUh! what do you mean by bubble wrap? I'd like to see this I didn't think you or maybe not you but your mechanic was like this> We do not do business this way and will not continue with this any farther. If the accusations go away the we can talk farther.. bottom line we came in and fixed the issues and even did some driveability with you after car was running and you agree'd to pay through email and that's what we expect. my opinion is your local mechanic got in over his head and may be trying to make someone look bad. but that's for you to decide as you can tell we go out of our way to help our customers and we expect to get paid in return
The bubble wrap he is referring to is when he ran the wires through the firewall he wrapped them with bubble wrap, standard packing stuff, instead of using a grommet. I just wrote back, "I do not know how you expect me to be? I paid 3000 dollars for you to install and tune the system. You told me it would take two weeks and it took over six months. Then, when I got the car back it lasted a total of three days. Then the shop, you, who installed it will not take responsibility for the problem even though it was proved, by three other mechanics, to be a problem you created. How would you feel, if you were in this situation?" All I really want is to get him removed off the electromotive list, because that is how I found him and I would like others not to have this problem, but I do not think there is any way I can do that. I have spent a year fixing his problems so I am just going to let it go and move on.
Well, to start off....
Jud Long has you beat by a mile. His took 2 years and about $12k to get a car that barely runs, has every major component ZIP TIED into place, and a harness that had the majority of it ran ACROSS THE TURBO EXHAUST MANIFOLD and hence majorly melted.
I have no idea what Fla. Laws are concerning Auto repair. Maybe you should look into it.
In Michigan, a technician needs to be certifide or you cannot be charged. A repair bill with an accurate estimate must be signed by you BEFORE any work can be performed or you cannot be charged. Any parts replaced must be returned to you (or physically shown/sold if a core charge is applicable) or you cannot be charged.
If you unknowingly pay anyway, a quick call to the state will start a process to have your money refunded or the business will be shut down until they pay you.
Other than that, I agree that you should continually pursue them with your repair bill and make them pay it. I think you have good legal grounds to do so.
