Thats sweet, but the car will be cut in half when you get it
is that the way it is for all imported cars, cus there are a couple 93 skylines that i am lookin at right know
no i do know some componys that have the cars shipped not in half but it usually takes a good amount of money to have them meet us standards (what those are i do not know ) a guy in maine has a skyline but he cant drive it in maine cause it hasnt meet standards yet
so let's see... an auto (like all the toyotas) Z24 with toyota badging and rhd.
i know there are lots of nifty parts and the tails are considerably better looking...
but would you pay that much to get a rhd cav?
yeah, i understand and all...but really, it's got a road flare and japanese instead of english on lots of parts.
i still say just get the tails and call it good. i loved the sets i used to have...
Have you seen the turbo wagon?
14.069 @ 98.91mph
229.1hp & 261.7ft/lbs @ 6psi
no tuning time
they usually chop cars that haven't been tested...and since the toyota cav was low production, it didn't take safety inspection is the story I heard...
well in order for them to be legal its gonna cost you a pretty penny. Something about changing some things to meet our standards like the window glass they have is real glass not like what we have(ours stays together when it shatters.). Also, moto rex will or used to bring anything you wanted from japan over but im not sure whatever happened to them supposedly they were into some trouble.

The second switch is the rear window demister.
I have seen this topic come up so many times with no definative anwsers. Did a little searching via google and come up with the following.......
While there is no specific restriction on importing a right-hand drive vehicle, these may not be imported under eligibility decisions based on the existence of substantially similar U.S.- certified left-hand drive vehicles. Our experience has shown that the safety performance of right-hand drive vehicles is not necessarily the same as that of apparently similar left-hand drive vehicles offered for sale in this country. However, we will consider the vehicles "substantially similar" if the manufacturer advises us that the right-hand drive vehicle would perform the same as the U.S.-certified left-hand drive vehicle in dynamic crash tests.
The above is care of
NHTSA
I cannot see why a Toyota Cavalier would differ from a Chevy Cavalier other than the obvious cosmetic differances and of course being RHD.
On my one the Headlight units have export stickers on them. Reason being the throw of the beams is opposite to the US. So the headlights would have to be swapped over .
But is you read the above quote from the NHTSA ...
However, we will consider the vehicles "substantially similar" if the manufacturer advises us that the right-hand drive vehicle would perform the same as the U.S.-certified left-hand drive vehicle in dynamic crash tests ..... It is identical to a Chevy Cavalier is it not ?
Gavin
Should have also added.
there were only 20000 of these ever produced out of how many LHD produced between '96 til 2004. Got to be worth a few $$$ in years to come and the ones coming out of Japan in the second hand market a like new. Low milage. Something else to think about.
i just with i knew more about importing car here to the us.
Bah.... Just build your own
Just import it into Mexico and drive it across the border.

And what? Never register it to make it legal to drive?

Performance cars do not win car shows and show cars do not win races.
It's up to you to decide which you'd rather win.
Well, I'll tell you what I know, and most of the rules are similar for CDN / USA - Foreign importations:
1. if there is a comparable model sold in the country of importation, all that needs to be done is alter only those components that are not up to spec.
2. if there is no comperable model sold in the county of importation, there is usually a year limit to the licensing ban (Canada is 15 years, I know for certain, USA I believe is 5-7 years, but don't quote me on that).
3. you will most likely have to run an emissions check on the vehicle as well as a regular vehicle inspection.
4. you will more than likely have to hire a customs broker to look after all applicable paperwork and whatnot, including US Customs inspections (they've been fairly crabby the last couple years).
The car is only chopped before importation if there is a problem with a rear-end collision, as well, some people only want to harvest the engine/trans and other parts. it's pre-eminently cheaper to ship those parts over and pay the same shipping costs for twice the merchandise
If you want to get a full vehicle (like I do, I have designs on a r32 skyline) you need to either wait out the import/licensing limit, or prepare to fork over a few more dollars to get it ready for licensing. The Only hitch to importing vehicles for pleasure is that you need to license the cars, if you don't want to put it on the road (ie. make a race-only car), you don't need to worry about the inspections. If you do, however, either be prepared to fork over the money or, apply for an exemption from the DOT.
BTW, if you get the Cav, and it is to become your daily driver, get used to carrying an extra passenger if you plan to go to a drive-through.

thats great and all but I dont get you guys on here, You ALL know that I have been bring JDM cars in now for over a good year! I have posted in the past about what you think you know you dont and how its not that easy. If it was then everyone would have one in there drive way! I just dont get why you would go and try this and then end up losing the car in US Customs and losing out on all that money plus paying fines for not being a R.I. Maybe some of you guys dont know that we do this all the time and we can get you anything you need.
streetline list cars
Dont take this post as a attack, I am just saying all the times i have posted over the years about this topic you guys still dont understand.
SHOCKWAVE IS BACK
i just showed the toyo cav. because it is the J-BODY site. there are a ton of other cars that are on that site that i would love to have. i was just wanting to know about the site. but thanks for all the great posts. and the hated one, i know u have been bringing parts here
from there, i love your products, i was just thinking that instead of transforming your car into a jdm, might as well buy one.

but your not seeing that its STREET LEGAL!

I believe most cars are street legal. lol
I dont think you understand how it works, any and i mean any JDM car that comes to the states or even Canada is not street legal. Its because Japan has different specs for there cars to be street legal their then here. This is a big problem if you wanted to get one and drive it here. You will need to goto the DOT and EPA and do the things that will make it street legal. And just so you guys know you cant do it! it has to be done by a R.I. that works with the US Customs, DOT and EPA. In the end your looking at about 10k up to 25k for some cars. Its a long BS thing that you have to do and most of the time you cant even get the car street legal because the DOT or the EPA will just say NO and thats it.

worste part is atleast 80% of the toyota cav is the same as ours , lol
steve has gotten some sweet RHD cars into the US , so trust what he says about it , it aint easy
