Carfax

Hi, I've been around for a few months now, but just start to really looking into transforming my car into one of my many visions.

I was with another member today, and he pointed out on my car that the plate around the rear license plate was a different color red than the red on my trunk.

Seeing as I'm only 16 and I didn't pay for the car, what is there I can do?

I checked carfax.com, and it showed that there were 9 records for the VIN.

What should I do?

What is there you want to do?

I want to find out if the car was in an accident that I wasn't informed about.

Because if it was and the dealership didn't tell me, isn't that against the law?

so you paid for the carfax report... read it. if there are any accidents listed, you can take them to the dealership and find out if they know anything about it. if they knew about the accidents and didn't tell you, then you can try whatever legal action you want.

you have a 2005 sunfire... so what do you mean by the "plate around the license plate"? are you talking about the plastic bezel that bolts to the trunk lid with the license plate and reverse lights on it? if so, it doesn't come painted stock, and someone might have painted it before you got the car.

Ohhh, I see.

I thought it was painted to match the rest of the car.
And i can't read the carfax report seeing as I don't have a credit card.

First not all body parts are painted in same place at GM. I believe there's 3 shades to any paint code that is acceptable, the actual color and one lighter and one darker. It's possible you got each extreme so it's more noticeable. If you are asking about the 05 listed in your registry I might be a little leary about the car, then again dealers could of whored it in dealer trades and having the 9 entries. Your best bet would be to pony up the cash for the full carfax report. Keep in mind just because there is 9 entries doesn't mean any is a negative.

Alright. Thanks for the information.

Now I just have to find someone to let me use their credit card number.

Right. Mine had 11 last I checked, 2 from the initial purchase, the trade in, title xfer for the trade in, and my purchase (I'm the second owner on my Sunfire), and the rest are emissions reports.

Hmm.

I was thinking about the information we got about my Sunfire from the dealer when my parents bought it.

It had 9,000 miles on it, one previous owner, bought it at an auction for 9,100, then we end up paying somewhere in the ballpark of 9K.

Does that price seem pretty low?

a little below KBB, but sounds right for an auction price.

Thanks for the help and the quick replys.

Maybe I won't worry about this as much as I was.

Yes, thank you.

Glad nothing is wrong with it, but now I have to find something to cover up the area around the license plate.

thats sounds about right. if it had been sold through a salvage auction(insurance total loss) it would have sold for less then $3000

I was thinking more along the lines of being in a crash, not a complete wreck.

hell, my wife's old corolla had something like 13 records. i was the third owner. it'd be bought, traded in, transfered, sold...lots of stuff. i think the record for passing smog even ends up in the carfax if i'm in mistaken. never was an accident though.

GO PATS!!!

I was looking at a car at the junk yard for an eco swap. I decided to get the carfax to see any info on the mileage. It turns out the carfax said it had a clean title and no reported accidents. The thing had been written off as totaled for 8 months by Geico. Carfax is great and all, but not perfect.

I was looking into their buy it back guarantee. For some reason I thought they would buy it back for blue book value. They would just reimburse purchase price. Oh well, could have made some cash on that one. I suppose I could have stripped it for parts and had them buy it back :p

^^^^^ im not sure where your from, but 90% of the time Canadian cars don't show up on Carfax. we use a different company (not sure what it is ill check tomorrow) because Carfax is pretty much useless to us in Canada.

a note on title branding.
not all cars are branded salvage, irreparable, junk title ect ect. its usually only cars that are hit hard, burn cars and water damage. in Ontario it is totally up to the adjuster to determine of the car gets branded.

I live in Utah, the car was totaled in Wyoming. Carfax should have had some hits. The thing had been sold several times at auction, Geico wrote it off. Someone somewhere should have submitted paperwork. Lots of people messed up it seems.

Re: Carfax

No mess ups. It is purely up to CarFax and it's available sources of information if anything shows up. It is possible Wyoming doesn't supply data to CarFax or just doesn't supply it on a regular basis. Same goes for Geico. It all depends if that particular VIN shows up in some of the data that CarFax purchases or sources from various companies and government agencies. You can get some CarFax reports that even show regular maintenance. While other reports only show title transfers.
