Engine Identification
Monday, September 10, 2007 6:08 PM
Hi,

I have an Ecotec engine that I am putting into my dune buggy and need to know for sure what year it is. The shop I bought it at said it came out of a 2003 Cavalier, but the place was very disorganized and I want to make sure for the after market computer I am buying for it. The engine has a sticker on the front of it that looks like a bar code with numbers under the bars 10GE8T302131194 and some numbers on the side of the block 90537846. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

if all he's concerned about is the year, and he has access to the vin, he can just go to carfax.com himself. they'll give you the year, make, model, engine, and amount of reports for free. its if you want details on it all that you have to pay.

^^He doesnt have the vehicle VIN number, he has the Engine Idenfication #s.... you should easily be able to go to dealer and have them look it up. my book only tells the decode if u have the VIN.. not engine id. If you can get the Car's VIN# find the 10th character and if its a
2 = 2002
3 = 2003
4 = 2004
5 = 2005

and like mentioned maybe carfax could help but thats not the vehicles VIN..so i didnt know they do Engine Identification..

i thought the VIN was imprinted on the engine in a place or two? did they grind that off?

also, im not into the ecos that much, but what differences are there with the 02+ 2.2s? i can understand differences between the 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4 ecos, but arent all 2.2 eco parts swappable at this moment?

The reason I want to find the year of the engine is because the aftermarket computer I am getting is set up for the Ecotec by year model, the later model computer will not work with earlier years.

Is there a way of looking at Ecotec's to know what year they are.
Are there certain changes that were made from 2003 -2006???

I'm not claiming to be very knowledgeable, but I believe the 2003-2005 Ecotecs are all the same. The 2002's have a different fuel rail I believe, but that's about it. I'm not 100% so wait for somebody else to back me up or disagree. At the very least, consider this a bump ;D
