I am driving to vegas... which is a 23 hour drive from where I live. I have never gone longer then a 12 hour drive at 100km/h in my cav. I am taking I-15 for 16 hours straight roughly. I am told the I-15 is 75mph, which is roughly 130km/h. Is it healthy to take a 4banger on a 16 hour drive at 130km/h ??? It seems like high rpm for a motor at that speed.

I normally get 45-48mpg at 100km/h ... what do you guys think I will get at 130km/h???

high RPMs? my LD9 runs at 2100 RPM at 70MPH, that is not high... what RPM are you cruising at

If RPM is too high select higher gear.

At 70-75 mph, the Eco runs at around ~2700 rpm.

I've driven straight to Texas going that fast from the Tennessee, then the next day turned around and came back. Change your oil before your trip and it'll be fine.

no kidding. the best i got was 30 mpg goin 65 mph. i think he's got his km/h & mph crossed. would it be 45-48 km/g instead?

I just finished a 7000km round trip where I was driving 12-16 hours at a time. I really only stoped for gas and to sleep. The eco performed without troubles. Just make sure to change your oil before the trip. I was actually pretty surprized with the passing power of the eco on down shifts. It was pretty peppy at highway speeds. I averaged about 550-600 km a tank.

Long drive prep tips:

- Change oil with full synthetic, lubricate all joints, new Oil and clean air filter.
- Tighten all bolts on wheels, check all tire pressures including the spare
- First tank of gas: Dump in a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner (black bottle) have 2 other STP FI cleaners (white bottle).

okay.. Ecotecs are great on the highway, even with the auto trans. The fuel consumption oughtta be around 30 MPG, but you can up that by laying off the gas a bit and drafting behind transports or buses. Handling with J's on the highway I've found is no biggie, but I've found that J's don't do particularly well in crosswinds or passing transports that have a a big front end that kick out a big wake.

As far as long trips, be sure that you have a clean air filter and make sure your tire pressures are in spec. After that... basically, just lube everything you're supposed to, and then flush and change the oil. The fuel injector cleaner should be put in before you change the oil, but whatever, you're going to be running the car for a long enough time it won't matter. Other than a transmission flush/fill (shouldn't be necessary), and checking your coolant levels and all your lights, you oughtta be gold.

Oh.. get rid of any plate covers you have (even if they're clear). Give the highway patrol one less thing to potentially bitch about.

But, at 70 I'm slightly over 3000 rpm, so I'm assuming the lower numbers are auto's right?

^^^I run right at 85mph and the Cavy hits 3,000rpms...that's 130kmh.

Not sure why you are seeing such high rpms...mine is a 5-speed also?

Mine is at 3 grand at 70 in 5-th gear also...... I've got an Izuzu 5-speed in it right now.....

I drove at around 90mph or so coming back from Milwaukee once..... and pretty much stayed at around that speed the entire way (interstate at like 2:30am)..... for over 5 hours once...... the car didn't have any problems at all.

ive gotten 46 mpg on my eco once. but long highway trip no city miles lol. how come some of you are at 3000rpm at 70mph with the eco (if 5 speed). i got a 5 speed in mine and at 75mph im doin about 2700rpm.

opps my bad...... I forgot we where talking about Eco's... I've got a LD9..... although they should still "handle" the same..... and mine does fine.

Trip is done....5000kms tacked on the odometer. Everything went smooth. Car is loud as hell at the speed with motor/wind/tire noise. I had winter rubber on also.

I have not worked out my gas mileage yet. Although, I did note that at 75mph I was at 3200 rpm.

WOW gas is cheap in the USA. You guys are lucky. I noticed alot of pumps had 85 octane... if the cheapest vechile on the market, the jbody, needs 87 octane....what the heck is the 85 octane for?
