Before I start, yes I did search. I'm just lookin for some clarity on the subject.
I have recently been considering swapping the engine from my 98 sunfire gt to a 98 cavalier z24, both are five speeds and both are 2.4l twin cams. I would like to know the difficulty for some whos only gone as far as a tranny swap ( manual to manual, sunfire to sunfire), and of course whats involvled, for example, any wiring and any on board computers. I would also like to know which is the easiest way to pull the engine I've heard pulling from the top, dropping the front clip, or even pulling the tranny and engine as seperate pieces.
Sorry if its alot of questions but im just trying to learn as I love my J and trying to keep it alive.
Thanks in advance for any input is appreciated.
Other than some sheet metal on the outside, both cars are exactly the same, electrically and mechanically.
As far as pulling them out, dropping it down would be easiest, problem is you have to raise the front of the car up high enough to slide an engine out, doesn't seem like much but it is. You can angle it out and pull it out the top, but either you need to modify the subframe to clear the transmission, or you need to remove the subframe completely. Either way I'd leave the engine and transmission together.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
So I wont have to switch any wiring or on board computers?
The subframe on one car is already cut from a previous tranny swap I did, but I wont have to drop the whole clip to remove the engine?
Raising the car may prove to be an issue since I live in an apartment building and am limited to a single outdoor parking spot, I also may be doing it alone.
All things to consider before I go through with this I guess.
Thanks for the reply.
in that case, you will want to rip it out from the top. very possible, even by yourself. wont be all that fun without someone else there helping muscle it around....but should be fine.
The wiring will be 100% compatable though. they are the same car. different badge.
